Buy used from: $12.43 This is a staple for the standards that are included. I used this cookbook, as well as books from the Silver Palate series, regularly in my first few years of marriage. Every household needs one excellent, general cookbook. This one is mine (although mine is a 1980's version).

Buy used from: $0.01 I cannot imagine making it through the 1980's or 1990's without the Silver Palate cookbooks. The book not only contains great recipes, but it is highly readable. I've spent evenings poring through the book, reading for entertainment as well as for the recipes. Two favorites of ours are the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and the Cornbread-Sausage Stuffing with Apples.

Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.01 Pretty much everything I said for the Silver Palate Cookbook goes for the Good Times book. The choices for the different occasions are appropriate and fun to think about. A few recipes that we have made and continue to make are the Surprise Flapjacks, Christmas morning tradition; Comforting Shredded Beef for cool weather; Tomato-Spinach Roulade a nice extra for special occasions.

Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $0.98 Love this cookbook. Although it doesn't replace Better Homes & Gardens for my cooking basics go-to book, it does serve as the book I go to when I want something a little more sophisticated, slightly different, or for special occasions. I enjoy this book as much for it's charm as for the recipes. The Beef Bourguignon is an absolute favorite of my husband's.

 | The Williams-Sonoma Collection: Pasta by Erica De Mane
Buy new: $12.20 / Used from: $3.75 A slim book busting full of excellent and doable recipes. I have made many recipes from this book, and every one of them has been above good. The recipe I make most frequently is the Bolognese Sauce. Another favorite, that is quick & easy to throw together, is the Penne alla Vodka.
