Customer Reviews

the only album you need to buy5
9 times out of 10 if something comes up on my ipod's shuffle setting causing me to exclaim "What in the hell is this? This is amazing!!!" it turns out to be UFO Or Die. I wish there was a picture of the album cover because then I could say that it sounds exactly like it looks. Like a vomit explosion of hyperactive glitter neon collage.

The other review here, though less enthused, is basically accurate in its description. I'd only say that the quality does not seem lo-fi to me, at least no more lo-fi than anything on MY ipod. But it IS called Cassettetape Superstar. Also, I theorize that this is better appreciated in small doses. Dedicate next month to meditating on one track per day.

I can't believe there are actually copies of this available here, and for a reasonable price! Maybe I'll just buy them all myself.

Kindergarten Sound Collage Hardcore2
UFO or Die was a trio featuring Eye and Yoshimi from Boredoms, and a bass player.Eye does his usual screeching, babbling cartoon vocal freakouts and guitar noise and sampling. In the early days Eye would play guitar, but in a kind of percussive fashion,or more to the point, like a preschooler on a sugar high. His main chore is to mess around making guitar noise while Yoshimi(drums)and Hayashi(bass)provide more competent musicianship.

Anyone familiar with Boredoms early records will not be shocked by anything here.Although amusing,I don't think it's essential that anyone seek out this album. It's more of a low brow concept album in some ways,it paints colorful pictures in my head, but not much else.

While there are alot of ideas on this album, what it generally boils down to is thrashy drums/fx scattered all over the place, barely there bass lines,Eye babbling and screaming like a monkey on fire, and various sound fx jumping in and out of the mix.

I've heard a single by UFO or Die called Chop Warp which had great use of a Hendrix guitar sample and great overall production values and was what I think this album should have aspired to.

The biggest problem with this cd is the horrible sound production, which I imagine was intentional. The sampling is very lo-fi,the mix is not loud enough for anything to stand out and grab your attention. You can hear some interesting ideas and some fairly cool bass lines but they are muddy and buried amidst all the chaos.
