About the Author
Michael H Popkin, Ph.D. founded Active Parenting Publishers in 1983. Soon after, he introduced the first video-based parenting education program, Active Parenting. This program and its revisions through the years have helped millions of parents develop cooperation, responsibility and courage in their children.
Prior to founding Active Parenting Publishers, Dr. Popkin practiced family therapy in Atlanta, GA. His work with confused parents and unhappy children convinced him that parents were not receiving the information and tools they needed to help their children become responsible, contented adults. He has served on numerous advisory boards, including the panel of experts assembled for the United States Office of Substance Abuse Prevention. Dr. Popkin is widely know for his expertise in the field of parent education and has appeared on over 100 TV programs, including CNN and the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Dr. Popkin earned a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University and served as Director of Child and Family Services at an Atlanta hospital before entering private practice. Dr. Popkin lives in Atlanta with his wife and two children.
From AudioFile
A veteran parenting expert offers an exceptional program on how to seize the initiative when it comes to developing happy and responsible children. Regular family meetings and deftly construed interventions for misbehavior are key suggestions. The program shows how to create a communication structure within the family that clarifies values, spells out expectations, and creates a nurturing crucible for emotional development. With a tone that encourages rather than moralizes, the program holds no illusions about family life these days. It pulls no punches about drugs, sex, and violence. The advice about communication is astute and methodical. The combination of exposition, well-acted vignettes, and authentic author commentary makes the audio move quickly and hold one's attention. I am a grandmother. I brought my children up using spankings. It is nice to learn other methods of discipline.
