Fact: In 1917, Katherine Cross was murdered. Her gravestone in Konawa, OK bears the epitaph "Murdered By Human Wolves." This is her story. Acclaimed werewolf saga author Steven E. Wedel touches again the universe he portrayed in his first novel Shara. Murdered by Human wolves is that rare mix of fact and fiction that brings out an incredible story. Teamed up with the fictional account in this exclusive volume is Steven's essay "On the Trail of Werewolves: An Interview with Mary Franklin, Paranormal Researcher" which details the findings of her researches in the Konawa cemetery where Katherine Cross is buried.

Lucky find
I stumbled across this book (well, pamphlet really) in a used book store. It had an interesting title and good cover art so I gave it a try. I'm really glad I did.
It is a well written, fast paced story about an incident that happened in Oklahoma in 1917 and based on a tombstone inscription that said "Murdered by Human Wolves". It works backwards from that inscription to tell a very original werewolf tale. It creates an original take on both werewolf society and the humans who hunt them.
And, the interview with Mary Franklin (Paranormal Researcher) at the end is also a pretty chilling tale. It could probably grow into its own full length story someday.
All in all, a fun little read that I highly recommend.
One helluva ride!
This is a tremendous book. Well written, it is for the true genre lover as well as for anyone. Steven Wedel has created a world based on a stone marker found in a graveyard near Konawa, Oklahoma, and it's a place that sucks you in, straps you down and takes you for an eye-popping ride from the first page to the last.
An extremely focused point of view strengthens the presentation of the story. The characters are believable and their actions were consistent with what I expected them to do; that is, until one point in the battle between the locals and the McGrath's. That's when the unexpected happened, and the story evolved from scary to "OH MY GOD, this could really happen!"
There is a wicked sort of villainy in this story that will keep the pages turning and lights on all night long. Highly recommended!
Fast paced with wonderful characters
Steven E. Wedel has taken it upon himself to resurrect an often overlooked area of the genre, werewolves - and he's doing quite a job of it! With his upcoming "Murdered by Human Wolves" he rounds off his werewolf collection with a story based on facts.
Based on fact brings a new level to any story, the 'what if' factor. First, how much of this is real? Could be real? The 'facts' in this story add more by making you curious of the epitaphs in your own graveyards... what do they really mean?
"Murdered by Human Wolves" is an amazing tale that introduces you to the innocence and curiosity of youth, the dangers around them, and leaves you thinking. Monsters DO exist. Besides those of folklore, legend, and fiction - we meet and greet them every day and unbeknownst to us, they carry on. This story offers several 'monsters' - you decide who the real monsters are!
Fast paced with wonderful characters, Wedel gives us another piece of his vision with style and atmosphere. This one is definately worth getting, and remember it includes a very interesting interview/investigation into Katherine Cross' life and death. The book will be available as an e-book and in print, near the end of January 2004. Wedel will be signing 25 copies of the book for use in contests, promotions, etc. Watch the HorrorWeb for more information...
Rating? Definately a five.
