![]() | Stories of a Recovering Fundamentalist: Understanding and Responding to Christian Absolutism by James Alexander
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $18.90 I wrote this one. It allowed me to gain a great deal of familiarity with other books on the topic. My book is particularly of interest because it combines a memoir of my personal experience and much relevant research. This combinations serves to maintain interest and illustrates research derived from other sources. It's a good read!

![]() | American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America by Chris Hedges
Buy new: $19.00 / Used from: $1.76 This is a very useful book for those who are interested in the political implications for fundamentalism in American society. The treatment of fundamentalists deals with the more extreme variety. The book is rather (or very) polemical. It is accurate, but may go too far in describing the "run of the mill" fundamentalist.

![]() | The Beliefnet Guide to Evangelical Christianity (Beliefnet Guides) by Wendy Murray Zoba
Buy new: $15.00 / Used from: $0.01 A popular treatment of the topic of evangelicalism. It's an easy read, but one is stuck with the question, "Are evangelicals and fundamentalists the same basic crowd?" Reading the book, they certainly sound alike. The introduction is written by Philip Yancey, a prominent evangelical.

![]() | The Battle for God by Karen Armstrong
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.43 Well, what can I say? This one is certainly written by the "guru" of the history and character of religion. It is very interesting because it allows one to review and compare the history (ancient and contemporary) of fundamentalism among the Abrahamic faiths. It's a bit weighty, but a good starting point for one beginning some serious scholarship in the arena.

![]() | When Religion Becomes Evil by Charles Kimball
Buy used from: $10.00 This book mainly points out the danger of absolute truth claims. Absolutism is the doorway to a religion that becomes evil. Much of the focus is on radical Islam.
|
![]() | The Psychology of Religious Fundamentalism by Ralph W. Hood Jr.
Buy new: $25.92 / Used from: $18.00 Too bad this book didn't get a wider play. It is a true gem. It is written by folks who are understanding of the topic and not completely without sympathy. It is a true "psychology" of a movement-- not in name only. It is well written and well documented.
|
![]() | Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity by Bruce Bawer
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01 Perhaps a bit sensational in places, but it's a book with attitude. Bawer demonstrates how fundamentalism denies the Christian faith it purports to uphold. It is a popular treatment for the lay reader-- especially if they are a bit angry about the fundamentalist ( or attempted fundamentalist) takeover of Christianity.
|
![]() | Many Mansions by Harvey Cox
Buy new: $18.00 / Used from: $1.67 This is the opposite of a book on fundamentalism. Still, it is a useful read if you are researching the topic. Cox deals with the idea of religious pluralism-- which is about as far away from a fundamentalist view as one can get. Read it to remind yourself that there are folks who still maintain a broad view of religion.
