It might seem redundant to dismiss the fourth and final Twilight novel as escapist fantasy--but how else could anyone look at a romance about an ordinary, even clumsy teenager torn between a vampire and a werewolf, both of whom are willing to sacrifice their happiness for hers? Flaws and all, however, Meyer's first three novels touched on something powerful in their weird refraction of our culture's paradoxical messages about sex and sexuality. The conclusion is much thinner, despite its interminable length. Everygirl Bella achieves her wishes quickly (marriage and sex, in that order, are two, and becoming an immortal is another), and once she becomes a vampire it's almost impossible to identify with her. But that's not the main problem. Essentially, everyone gets everything they want, even if their desires necessitate an about-face in characterization or the messy introduction of some back story. Nobody has to renounce anything or suffer more than temporarily--in other words, grandeur is out. This isn't about happy endings; it's about gratification. A sign of the times? Ages 12-up. Really Let Down
I waited for months and months to read this book and was so excited when it came out. What a sad dissapointment it turned out to be.
I felt that Stephenie Meyer was more concerned with the element of surprise throughout the book than she was with making sure that the plot was decent and made sense.
Another thing, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks this, was that the chacters didn't have their normal personalities, they didn't seem the same. I found myself not feeling what Bella was feeling like I did the the last three books.
All and all, I was very dissatisfied with this book and wish that the series had ended with Eclipse.
Everyone needs to RELAX.
**This Review Contains Spoilers**
So many people freaking out over the contents of this book just need to calm down, IT'S JUST A BOOK!
Meyer knew after the book was finished that people would either love it or hate it.
I see no problem with this conclusion, even with the whole pregnant at 18 thing. If some girls are reading this thinking there is some kind of Edward out there waiting for her and that she too will drop all her plans for him and a baby, when then someone along their growing up their own parents screwed up. ALSO, I think Bella matured once she found out she was pregnant, I mean Edward's initial reaction was to get rid of it in fear it would kill Bella, but she grew up and handled the consequences.
I'm 21 and just enjoy a good love story, I don't care how old the characters are!
What did creep me out in this book though, was the fact Jacob imprinted on Bella and Edward's child. I almost would rather not know if he ended up happy with someone.
Also, I was a little underwhelmed by the action, I mean for a big chunk of the book it's all worrying about the Volturi and what they're going to do when they get to Forks to destroy them, yet it was probably the easiest conflict in the entire series.
But I do enjoy happy endings, because life isn't like that, so it's nice to read about it.
BREAKING DAWN IS A DISAPPOINTMENT
I anticipated Breaking Dawn like so many other fans only to be let down at the end of a great book series. I loved the other three books, even New Moon which was not my favorite but at least the story-telling and character driven plots kept my interest. However, the quality of writing and overall plot development made this book a huge disappoinment. At times it felt like it was not written by the same author who had written the previously three.
The overall feel of the book was quite different than the other three. The main characters, although they retained a resemblence of their former selves, acted out of character for the large majority of the book. In the previous book, Bella was faced with the realization that some choices me make in life require sacrifices yet in Breaking Dawn she doesn't have to adhere to this realization due to the fact that her and many other charcaters get everything they desire. Another problem with the book was that there were several plot lines that were not fully developed, some that were left hanging and some that existed for no reason at all. The pregnancy storyline in this book felt completely out of place and forced. The most interesting part of Breaking Dawn is Bella's transformation into a vampire and how she adjusts. My major disppointment with the book was the buildup for a large climatic confrontation with the Volturi that failed to deliver.
This book had so much potential to bring closure to an incredible series of books, however, it failed to deliever on several accounts. I know some fans will love the book despite its shortcomings but to those who are new to the series you may want to stop with Eclipse.
