Excellent atlas for microbiology students
This atlas would be an excellent purchase for anyone interested in microbiology or for those students taking an introductory microbiology course (especially clinical/medical microbiology). The authors have included many common tests and stains performed in the laboratory, and contrary to what a previous reviewer has posted, this atlas contains many photographs that would be beneficial to those students having difficulty with bacterial identification in the lab. The authors have provided concise but relavent background information for all topics covered. There are only a few problems with the atlas. Aside from the fact that it is an unbound looseleaf package, for some the organization may leave something to be desired. Also, for those taking more advanced micro courses, the atlas may need to be supplemented with other material.
Great Book for Undergrad Students
I am an undergrad nursing student, and I can attest that this book is a great companion to microbiology lab activities. You can look up the microorganism you are viewing under the scope and compare what you see to the image the book displays. This is very helpful in this respect. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I do not care for the way it is organized. Overall, however, I would highly recommend this atlas to any microbiology student.
If you have the lab manual, you don't need the atlas!
I highly recommend that you don't spend the extra money on the photographic atlas if you have purchased the lab manual (Laboratory Theory and Applications) by the same authors. There is nothing special about it and it has all the same pictures that are in the lab manual.....If you don't plan on getting the lab manual then it is very interesting and I recommend it.
