Debra Anne Ross Lawrence earned a double BA in biology and chemistry with honors from the University of California at Santa Cruz and an MS in chemical engineering from Stanford University. A Note On Habits: "People who are able to control their weight are not necessarily more disciplined or smarter, but instead they have developed good habits that have become part of their daily life. The fact that habits are difficult to break can be a blessing in disguise, because once you make good ones and they become ingrained, you will be able to keep them. So, how do you successfully change your habits? My suggestion is very slowly. Work through the three-step staging process described above until you are comfortably following The 3:00 PM Secret, the 10-minute workout, the ten tips for good nutrition, getting adequate sleep, and focusing on making your life more exciting and meaningful, and beginning to live your dreams."

Flawed Heart4
I am giving this book 4 stars despite the title of my review. Why? because the author seems to really know her stuff. She lays out the scientific basis for her program in a very readable and accessible way. Her nutritional and physiological facts and figures are not in question, at least not in my mind. In addition to sound nutritional advice, she offers a very basic but good weight training program for those not inclined to spend hours on a treadmill every week, but still want to maximize the benefits of regular exercise. And I did enjoy considering the book's assertions despite the rather cheesy vignettes that introduced each chapter. So where's the flaw?

The ironclad advice to not eat after 3 PM at least 5 days per week is at the heart of the weight loss program outlined in this book. And, oh yes, eat healthfully whenever you eat. At the risk of sounding skeptical, wouldn't following the latter advice even if you ignored the former lead to similar results? I do applaud anyone who has found success on this program, or in any other reasonably healthy way and am not so closed-minded to not thoughtfully consider alternatives.

But for me, the decision really came down to not wanting to live in a vacuum. Unless you are living alone and have only yourself to consider, or perhaps just a partner or spouse who is also on the program, it becomes something theoreticaly ideal but maybe not very desirable in its practical application. For me, that would be to not have that touchstone of our family dinners every evening, well past the 3 PM deadine in this book. Its a time of respite for our family, when we come in from our daily responsibilities and enjoy a meal (yes as healthy and light as we can make it)and share our lives for a little while. It is a positive thing for my family and I suspect for many others as well and it can't be easily had on a strict deadline when the public schools, corporate America and the world at large just won't cooperate.

That having been said, this book does have a lot to say about the way we look at food and eating. It is well worth the reading. Every reader will have to decide for themselves if the 3 o'clock deadline will get them where they really want to be, or if there are worse things than dinner at 6.

UPDATED - LOST IT, KEEPING IT OFF, LIVING MY DREAMS5
The 3:00 PM Secret is a strong combination of inspiration and information that appeals to both heart and mind. It has motivated and equipped me to make choices in 'when I eat', as well as in my nutrition, exercise, sleeping, and other patterns that have already produced a weight loss of nearly 25 lbs, a lean, more rested body, and great optimism toward the future. I'm feeling and acting stronger, younger, and just plain happier. I know many many people whose bodies can't keep up with their dreams, who have repeatedly tried and failed to slim down, and have just given up hope. I am recommending Ms. Lawrence's book to them (in some cases giving them copies) because I want them to succeed, too! I must also add that one feature that sets this book apart from others is the amazing amount of research that backs up the author's propositions. While the text does not read at all like a text book, it will remain a wonderful reference book, and the numerous footnotes that tie back to scientific findings gave me confidence that I was receiving sound and proven advice and information, worthy of my reliance.

I know it seems difficult to change our living habits, even though we know our current practices are unhealthy and sometimes lethal. This little book will show you how to live a healthy, hopeful, happy life, and have the body that will carry you through all the wonderful adventures that lie before you. I am updating this since I have been following this book for another year since my review. I have EASILY held my weight loss and am down another five pounds. I am at my perfect weight. I don't even have to try to keep my weight where I want it - it is just so natural and easy. Something really does change with your desire when you follow this method, and you no longer need to fight temptation, you just don't want to eat at night or eat unhealthy foods anymore. I feel sorry for and frustrated with people I care about who are overweight since they think they cannot live without their nightly dinner ritual. I see them waddling around with their health issues and aging bodies, while I feel more youthful and athletic every day.

Well-informed, thoughtful, and thought-provoking5
Debra Lawrence's "The 3:00 P.M. Secret" is exceptionally informative and enjoyable. In presenting a program of good nutrition and exercise designed to produce a healthy, productive lifestyle, the author has sifted through hundreds of scientific-journal articles. She seamlessly incorporates findings from those articles into her writing to support her detailed, practical recommendations about nutrition, exercise, sleep, and aging. I found Chapter 6, on "Successful Aging," to be especially thought-provoking. It has a wealth of fascinating information about the effects of good nutrition and exercise (mental exercise as well as physical) in helping to avoid diseases such as Alzheimer's and in promoting fitness and creativity even in old age. The book is well organized and logically presented. Its style is lively and engaging. I recommend it.
