![]() | CliffsAP English Language and Composition (Cliffs AP) by Barbara V. Swovelin
Buy new: $11.04 / Used from: $1.25 My Lang teacher never did anything relevant to the exam. In May, I borrowed this book from my library, and I attribute my 5 to it. The questions are similar to the real thing, and the explanations are in the right line of thinking that you have to bring the exam in order to do well; that's all that this exam is about, how you think. It also has a useful glossary of literary terms.

![]() | Cracking the AP European History Exam, 2008 Edition (College Test Preparation) by Princeton Review
Buy used from: $3.98 This book literally has everything you need to get a 5. It's well organized into sections for certain periods, then subsections for countries or movements. I had a great teacher, but my school had block schedule, so I had to go months before I took the exam. I read this book & looked over my notes (didn't even use the textbook), and presto!

![]() | Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam, 2008 Edition (College Test Preparation) by Princeton Review
Buy used from: $3.68 Honestly, I had an awesome Chem teacher who taught us everything we needed, but thats how I know that this book is the best. It covers all the topics succinctly but thoroughly enough. Its a decent course companion, and unlike other chem prep books, it doesnt go too far in-depth (which is really easy to do with chem), so its a powerful review tool, though not a substitute for your textbook.

![]() | Cracking the AP Physics B Exam, 2008 Edition (College Test Preparation) by Princeton Review
Buy used from: $5.99 My Physics B class covered some topics in excruciating detail but left some by the wayside, so I had to fill in the gaps. The old book had enough to get me a 5, but it may not have been enough if I hadnt known some details already. My concern was that because the book tried to cover 3 tests in 1 (B, C Mech, & C E&M), it wasnt thorough. Now that theyre split up, I think itd be a strong review.

![]() | Cracking the AP Calculus AB & BC Exams, 2008 Edition (College Test Preparation) by David S. Kahn
Buy used from: $3.86 For Calc, I have 2 useful books instead of 1, depending on what you need the most. PR offers a decent review (hindered by no calculator info, which may have been rectified w/this edition), but its strong point is practice questions, which are plentiful & similar to the real thing, and the one thing about AP Calc is that you need to practice. I had a great teacher who used this book in class.

![]() | Be Prepared for the AP Calculus Exam by Mark Howell
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $10.00 The flip-side of the Princeton Review (PR) book: great information (almost like a concise textbook) with great explanations, but it's skimpy on the practice questions.
|
![]() | U.S. Government and Politics (Cliffs AP) by Paul Soifer
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $0.01 This book's content is extremely concise, yet by some miracle, it manages to cover exactly everything you need to get a 5. Next runner-up is PR, which has slightly better practice and slightly worse content, but its info about Free Responses was wholly off-base; it treated those like FRs from AP Euro or U.S. Hist. Maybe the 2008 edition fixed that, though.

![]() | United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination by John J. Newman
Buy new: $28.35 / Used from: $19.50 It's a bit on the long side, but it has everything you need for a 5. It's also a great course companion and even serves as a textbook alternative. Major flaw: no answer key to practice, but just search the answers online and you'll probably learn even more. Also, forgive me, Amazon, but it's available for $16.50 through the publisher's website, AMSCO School Publications, Inc., item # R 785 P.

![]() | English Literature and Composition (Cliffs AP) by Allan Casson
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $0.54 In a vein like its Lang counterpart's, this book offers good practice questions and general good content and strategies, and it has another good glossary of literary terms. I've heard that PR has a good guide, too, but I didn't use it. Students tend to like the more friendly, somewhat humorous tone of PR books, and that trademark of theirs, from what I saw, shines through in their AP Lit book.

![]() | Cracking the AP Economics Macro & Micro Exams, 2008 Edition (College Test Preparation) by David Anderson
Buy used from: $6.96 Like a lot of PR books, if anything, it errs on not enough depth, but it's still a solid review. However, I've heard that Economics for Dummies offers an incredibly high quality review, and even though it's not catered towards the AP exam (so it has no practice questions, test strategies, etc.), it's still good info.

![]() | Barron's AP Statistics by Martin Sternstein Ph.D.
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $3.67 Didn't take Stat myself, but a lot of friends did, and they said that this book had great content that's clear, easy-to-understand, and still detailed. The practice questions aren't exactly like the real exam, but they're still very good practice, and most of the explanations are sufficient.
|
![]() | How to Prepare for the AP World History 2007-2008 (Barron's How to Prepare for the Ap World History Advanced Placement Examination) by John McCannon
Buy used from: $0.26 I don't have a clear favorite for AP World, but if I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Barron's. However, it's long and has a little too much info that will bog you down. An alternative is PR, but they're a little too simple and don't go far enough. I wish that there was a happy medium between the two, but since there's not, go with Barron's.

![]() | 5 Steps to a 5 AP Psychology, 2008-2009 Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) by Laura Maitland
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $7.98 This is one of those great "has everything you need to know to get a 5, no more, no less" kinds of books, or so I've heard. Very thorough and clear, easy-to-read.
|
![]() | The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern by Carol Strickland
Buy new: $15.63 / Used from: $12.38 This isn't an AP test prep book, but it's a good overview of art history for, well, AP Art History, according to a buddy of mine who decided to take the exam without a class. It's Euro-centric, but heck, so is everything in this country, and although it isn't catered towards AP (so you'll have to do your own College Board research to find out about the test), it's a great resource for the exam.
|
![]() | CliffsAP Biology (Cliffs Ap Biology) by Phillip E. Pack Ph.D.
Buy new: $11.04 / Used from: $3.88 Definitely the best of the rest. Clear, comprehensive, concise: the three C's of AP prep books. From what I've heard, the second edition wasn't so hot, but the third edition hit it out of the park.
|
![]() | Cracking the AP Environmental Science Exam, 2008 Edition (College Test Preparation) by Princeton Review
Buy used from: $4.97 Well, they're all not so great, but this book is probably the best of the worst. It's a difficult subject to write a test prep book on (the tests can be really random sometimes), but this one tried, and while the review is good enough, especially alongside a textbook, the sample questions aren't wonderful.
