It is an ideal selection for anyone involved in living history activities because of the ideas for contemporary conversation and the authors' success in applying meat and bone to historical characters. A truly massive index of personal names gives graphic evidence to the wide range of historical figures and the part they played in the saga of the development of the American West. Included is a massive 223 volume bibliography for additional reading. And this reviewer gives such a book the highest possible recommendation for anyone interested in the subject. It is a welcome change from the dry history presentations that one comes across all too often. About the Author
Gary Wiles worked his grandpa's cattle ranch in the Rockies as a boy. He graveyarded as a cop thru a college B.A., then wore a Deputy Marshal's star until earning his Juris Doctorate. He tried civil cases nationwide until succumbing to writing and wildlife photography.

Delores M Brown grew up in historic Greeley, Colorado, near Ft. Vasquez. Her research skills built Behold's 223 volume Bibliography. Ponder's cover is her blend of Gary's eagle and landscape. Her artistic images grace posters, magazine and book covers.

History comes alive
The names are real. The places, dates and events are real. For those who fancy history in a novel type of setting, this is a worthy book. After reading numerous books on the fur trade and early western Americana, it was also an enjoyable read for myself.
The story centers around famed mountain man Bill Sublette and all the people in his immediate circle (his brothers Andrew and Milton, Tom Fitzpatrick, Jim Bridger, Ashley, Astor, Robert Campbell, the Whitmans and Spaldings, etc.)
The 1830's legendary fur trade with all the nit-picking rivalry between these companies, the romanticized rendezvous', Indian confrontations, personal relationships, missionaries, pleasure seekers, etc. are all brought to life in this book.
The authors breath air into these individuals from the past by having them conversing with each other throughout the book, and if one is familiar with these names and places from previous readings, all the more meaningful to the reader. The "backwoodsy" grammar can become somewhat of an obstacle in the reading itself, but once overcome, is a pleasure to read.
