Product Description

The tropical paradise of Kauai is an adventurer's dream. As the fourth largest Hawaiian island, Kauai has amazing beaches and a lush pristine interior that invite travelers to discover its hidden getaways. In Hidden Kauai, award-winning travel writer Ray Riegert balances coverage of Kauai's growing travel facilities — including the resorts, condos and restaurants around Poipu and Lihue — with extensive details on the island's many natural attractions, adventure activities, and still-undiscovered sites. The guide is packed with beach descriptions (36 in all), plus outdoor activities including 35 surfing spots, 23 snorkeling and scuba havens, 32 fishing areas, 7 sea kayaking routes, and 27 hikes. The author leads readers to over two dozen hidden locales including secret beaches, coastal bed-and-breakfast inns, and bits of wilderness. The wide range of dining reviews cover fresh seafood, Japanese, pan-Asian, and a dozen places to try local Hawaiian cuisine, while the 50 plus lodging recommendations range from condos and big hotels to cottage rentals and small inns.

Volume2
I just wish there could have been more beaches and detail. I found more places I wanted to swim just by looking at the big map I had along. Compared to all the other books for this island this one, for the money, is the thinnest with the least information.

Princeville didn't strike me as being very Hawaiian. It was a manicured housing development.

Hidden Kauai offers more for info for certain visitors5
Hidden Kauai: Including Hanalei, Princeville, and Poipu (Hidden Travel)

As an annual visitor to the Garden Island, I own many Kauai travel and hiking guides. This is one book I'll bring on my next visit. Ownership villas and timeshares abound from Poipu to Princeville, and Hidden Kauai gives details of this region that other guides rush past. The hiking trail section include names of flora and fauna most likely to be encountered (great for birders!). The restaurant, foodstand, and day-long excursion recommendations are most current, as are the shopping tips. It points out gay-friendly places - which usually are the most people-friendly, laid back and fun areas to visit. Hidden Kauai provides historical details specific to this island, which are missed in books that cover the entire state. Succinct and breezy writing make it light enough to pack with your sandals and sunscreen when visiting this postage-stamp paradise!

Good, But Showing Its Age3
I loved Reigart's Hidden Hawaii book from the mid-90's and was excited to get this updated (12-08) island specific book before our 03-09 trip. It's still good, well written, and provides a compact overview of the island, history and key spots to see, stay and eat. Reigart has delegated the updates to another writer who lives on Kauai. It now reads like a book written 15 years ago with updates forced in and some key items omitted. Example: called out as "special hidden" was Spouting Horn. A nice spot however three different tour busses came in the hour we were there (hardly hidden). This book still has value, however we found the Ultimate Revealed series more useful. This is a good second (supplemental) book if you're buying two when planning your trip. Recommended with reservations.
