Editorial Reviews
Album Description
A mesmerizing recording inspired by Ballads, the supremely beautiful album by the John Coltrane Quartet. Master jazz pianist Kenny Barron; saxophonists Bob Sheppard and Dave Ellis; bassist Peter Barshay; and drummer Lewis Nash pay tribute to these jazz greats by making this new selection of ballads their own. Recorded at Berkeley’s Fantasy Studios, the quintet’s tender, lyrical playing is astoundingly romantic.
About the Artist
Kenny Barron’s unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences inspired the Los Angeles Times to name him one of the top jazz pianists in the world. In the past, he has played with Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, and today continues to record and perform. He has earned nine Grammy nominations and is held in the highest regard by his peers.
Bob Sheppard weaves intricate lines on saxophone and flute with the elegance and self-assurance of a master, one who has played with everyone from Chick Corea and Steely Dan to Natalie Cole.
Saxophonist Dave Ellis is a rising star who has been at home performing with the Grateful Dead and leading his own group at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
Peter Barshay is a spirited, constantly inventive bass player who has performed with Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, and Bobby McFerrin.
One of the most in-demand drummers in the world, Lewis Nash has worked with Betty Carter, Ron Carter, Tommy Flanagan, Branford Marsalis, and Diana Krall, among many others. He teaches at the Julliard School in New York City and is a noted jazz educator.
