Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Internationally popular Australian cookbook author Hay (The New Cook) follows the savory classic dishes of Modern Classics 1, with this latest on sweets. Illustrating each recipe with a beautiful color photograph are simple instructions that place all the dishes within the reach of every level of cook. Covering the gamut from cookies to tarts and cakes to hot puddings, her recipes are simple, contemporary takes on time-honored favorites and new standards. From traditional Gingerbread Men and rich Chocolate Mousse to her individual Tiramisus, she includes dishes suitable for any occasion and any palate or diet. Many of the dishes are accompanied by captioned photographs and have adaptations of the finished dish, as with the Shortbread, which provides lemon, ginger and lavender varieties to tempt the palate. At the other end of the scale, "Short Order" pages have several short, snappy recipes that are quick, easy-to-prepare dishes and range from Tart and Bun Glaze to the Creme Anglaise. Ingredients, methods and bakeware asterisked within the recipes are described in the Glossary and Tools sections at the back of the book for those for whom further explanations are needed. Giving true meaning to the title Modern Classics, the resulting volume is a welcome addition to any cook's shelf and is sure to add to the ranks of Hay's growing number of fans.

About the Author
When most other girls were playing with their Barbie dolls or out climbing trees and getting their knees dirty, Donna Hay was in the kitchen, armed with a cookie cutter and ready to set upon every ingredient with a bottle of food colouring and a generous sprinkling of hundreds and thousands. It was experimental cooking at its best.

Over the years, Donna's interest in food and cooking grew and after some formal training, she began a career as a freelance food writer and stylist when she was 19. Donna was appointed food editor of leading Australian magazine Marie Claire and Marie Claire Lifestyle at the age of 25. While at Marie Claire, Donna wrote and styled four internationally bestselling books #150; Cooking, Dining, Flavours and Food Fast. The books received a number of the world's most prestigious food awards.

In 2001, Donna joined HarperCollins and released Off the Shelf: Cooking from the Pantry. Like all of Donna's other cookbooks it was a great success and can be found in hundreds of thousands of kitchens around Australia and the world.

Donna's recipes are renowned for their fresh modern flavours, stylish presentation, ease of preparation and readily available ingredients. Her relaxed approach to cooking inspire cooks of all levels of experience and her fresh, modern style has become a benchmark for contemporary cookbooks and recipe writing.

Her latest book, Modern Classics Book 1, is also destined to become a staple for every modern cook.

Donna's recipes and ideas can also be found in her magazine, Donna Hay, and in the Sunday editions of News Limited newspapers around Australia and in New Zealand.

Yum!5
I just got this for my birthday, and I couldn't be happier. The book is well laid out; the recipes are easy to follow and there is a photograph for every recipe. Just reading through the book makes you hungry. So far I have made two desserts out of here in the last month, both of which received rave reviews. Previous experience with the Donna Hay cookbooks has shown me that here recipes are well constructed and tested. I can't wait to try more recipes from here.

Delicious ;-()5
If you want to impress people with delicious treats that look complex yet are easy to make, this book is for you. Donna Hay's books are full of great ideas that are broken up into easy to make items that taste so good. As the title suggests, this book focuses on all the good stuff; desserts, cookies and cakes etc.
My favourite recipes (and the ones that I've made successfully so far) in here are Melting Moments, Triple Chocolate Semifreddo, Moist Chocolate Cake and the Simple Lemon Cake. Everything turned out OK for me (which is rare) and I credit that to her easy to follow instruction (the motivating pictures) and all the helpful hints. In the back of the book there is a Glossary, Before You Start, A Perfect Finish - all mini chapters to give you extra information and helpful tips. She is on a par to Rachael Ray. Both make great ideas and help you discover that we all can be good cooks. I really enjoy this book and hope you get to try some of the great recipes in here too because each one is easy and incredibly good.

Best Aussie (or ANY) Dessert Recipe Book! 5
I am American, but having lived in Sydney for over six years & married an Australian, it was such bliss to have been given this book as a 'bon voyage' gift! I can now make Anzac biscuits, caramel slice & pavlova with confidence. It's great too that the measurements have been 'converted' to American standards.
In any case, it is the one book that I always reference when having to make any type of dessert. I love the photography, the instructions & suggestions at the bottom of the recipes (ie. to make a cake lemon instead of vanilla, etc.). I'm also a big Donna Hay fan too -- shame the magazine isn't available in the US.
