The Best Films I've Seen In 2008 Part 2 (From Best To Worst)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Three-Disc Unrated Collector's Edition)Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Three-Disc Unrated Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.61
**** Another raunchy-yet-sweet romantic comedy with a star turn by a Judd Apatow sidekick regular, Jason Segel. He's definitely funny and vulnerable and carries the film adequately, but he's not who stands out most here. That would be some supporting players like Mila Kunis, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, and Russell Brand, who virtually steals the movie from Segel. Heartfelt and hilarious
Bolt (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition + Digital Copy)Bolt (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $11.00
**** A winning 3D-animated action-comedy. It doesn't reach "classic" status but it still has heart, wit, and visual razzle-dazzle. The voice acting from John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Mark Walton, and Susie Essman is very good. The story, about a dog trying to get back to his "person", is simple and heart-warming. Brisk, entertaining, heartfelt, and funny
Vicky Cristina BarcelonaVicky Cristina Barcelona
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.00
**** Woody Allen's sexiest film in years has stunning scenery and fine performances. Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, and Javier Bardem are all terrific. Penelope Cruz walks off with the film in a volcanic, sexy, and mesmerizing turn. It may be little more than an old man's mullings on life and romance, but this scenic and sensual trip to Spain is entertaining while it lasts
Stop-LossStop-Loss
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $1.04
**** A solid, emotional film. It's a little melodramatic at times, but co-writer/director Kimberly Peirce keeps the focus on the characters and the harrowing drama they endure. She's great at capturing rural life, and the performances are sturdy across the board. It isn't the best Iraq War drama, but it feels authentic for the most part and the actors keep us involved
RedbeltRedbelt
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.59
*** This MMA fighting film is merely an exercise in David Mamet. And even if it doesn't rank with his best, it’s still above-average. His signature macho dialogue feels a bit forced here. Chiwetel Ejiofor is superb in the lead, a riveting presence at the center of this dense and sometimes confusing plot. The movie had me right up until the corny final minutes, but until then it's a gripping film
The WacknessThe Wackness
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.32
*** Writer/director Jonathan Levine's coming-of-age memoir has solid performances, a wistful heart, and a GREAT soundtrack. Even if we know where this is going, Levine makes this a funny and entertaining journey. Josh Peck gives a mature performance. He grows on us. The brilliant Ben Kingsley is the heart and soul of the movie, and Olivia Thirlby and Famke Jenssen are also very good
DefianceDefiance
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.96
*** A corny, old-fashioned, but heroic true story about a few Jews who survived and fought back during WWII. Daniel Craig is well-cast, and Liev Schreiber is great. Director Edward Zwick paces this unevenly and lets a few cliches wear this down. But he knows how to stage a mean gun battle. It might be a tad trite, but Zwick, Craig, and Schreiber ennoble this vivid slice of history
QuarantineQuarantine
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.00
*** A claustraphobic and harrowing creep-fest. Director/co-writer John Erick Dowdle delivers genuine scares and solid acting. The film is a marvel of execution, with long takes infusing every moment with effectively chilling realism. Jennifer Carpenter is very good. Dowdle hasn't broken any new ground but his craftsmanship and commitment are first-rate. The best horror film of 2008
The StrangersThe Strangers
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.75
*** This horror film isn't original, but writer/director Bryan Bertino's feature debut is a slick and harrowing cat-and-mouse trapped-in-a-house chiller. It builds suspense slowly, subtlely, never once feeling smug or overly graphic. Bertino smartly keeps most of the violence off-screen and, thankfully, the plot holes are few and far between. The music is creepy too. A pretty scary horror film
Step Brothers (Two-Disc Unrated Edition + Digital Copy)Step Brothers (Two-Disc Unrated Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $9.99
*** This comedy aims low but comes up a winner. Almost. The comical courseness of the dialogue is made funny by Ferrell and Reilly. Director Adam McKay keeps the gags and set pieces well-paced, although the energy flags from time to time. The endless potty mouth is a bit wearing, but there's a lot of fun to be had watching Ferrell and Reilly go at in a no-holds-barred moronic farce
Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $6.05
*** Visionary filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov has crafted this summer's 'Bourne,' a breathless thrill ride where the camera work and editing create a visceral blur of an action film. The actors carry their roles well, even as the script becomes increasingly silly. Sure it's not great art, but it's not trying to be. Shut your brain off, take it in, and leave the theater exhausted
RocknRolla (Special Edition)RocknRolla (Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $7.67
*** Guy Ritchie makes something of a comeback with his latest multi-character piece of pulp. But the fun seems to be in short supply. A "who's who?" of character actors are pretty solid across the board. As many stories as Ritchie tries to juggle here, he takes too long to pick up the momentum, and, even then, never goes full throtle. But it's cool to see Madonna hasn't completely ruined him
The Incredible Hulk (Three-Disc Special Edition)The Incredible Hulk (Three-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $3.02
*** Well-acted and fairly fast paced, this is what the Hulk should have been when Ang Lee made his version. The stellar cast classes this up, and action veteran Louis Leterrier (of 'Transporter' fame) handles the action with aplomb. The first half is perfectly paced, but the second half stumbles as it sets up the "final showdown." Still, it's fun. Welcome back Hulk!
Hamlet 2Hamlet 2
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.93
*** This "inspirational" comedy is a goofy satire with some big laughs. It features a gonzo, hilarious tour de force by Steve Coogan, and director Andrew Fleming gives this heart and an outrageous politically incorrect veneer. Too bad he can't make this the breathless farce it should have been. Still, it has something to say about theatre and "art", and Coogan is just about brilliant
Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition)Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.57
*** Clint Eastwood's latest isn't the "masterpiece" it's been hyped up to be. And if he has played variations of this cantakerous sort before, he builds some heart and dark laughs into that Dirty Harry persona. The script is too melodramatic and doesn't cover any new ground, and the first-time actors are pretty bad. But Eastwood is commanding behind the camera, and in front of it
Role ModelsRole Models
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.99
*** This comedy walks down an all-too familiar path, but has plenty of laughs. Scripted and performed in the modern "rude boy" style (with a sentimental streak) it features enough hilarious bits to make this perfectly watchable. Rudd and Scott make a funny team, and the cast is a stitch. But this is Apatow-lite, and ultimately forgettable
CloverfieldCloverfield
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $0.42
*** It's 'Blair Witch' meets 'Godzilla' in J.J. Abrams' latest. Shot entirely on hand-held DV cameras, there's a certain realism here that makes the events that much more chilling. We sit in awe, fear, and paranoia, but, unfortunately, we never really care much for the characters. Still, it's entertaining enough to be perfectly watchable and scary enough to deliver some serious chills
You Don't Mess With the Zohan (Unrated Two-Disc Edition)You Don't Mess With the Zohan (Unrated Two-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $1.90
*** A rude, crude, tasteless, but often hilarious comedy. Sandler throws himself into the role of "The Zohan" in a way we haven't seen in a long time. It's all lowbrow in the extreme, but the hilarious premise sets up a series of sight gags, running gags, and mock of racial stereotypes (the most offensive stuff), a lot of which stick. As ashamed as I was at myself, I was laughing
Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition)Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $2.40
*** Isn't as fresh or funny as the original, it's also much more overtly political. The two potheads still can score laughs though, and they have a decent supporting cast who can score too. They range from hilarious side characters to too-short-but-funny cameos. The plot is lazy, and the romances are dull and distracting. But there are still some chuckles to be had with these two funny stoners
Drillbit Taylor (Unrated Extended Survival Edition)Drillbit Taylor (Unrated Extended Survival Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $0.98
*** Judd Apatow delivers this predictable but charming comedy. Owen Wilson is always entertaining to watch and his delivery here is hilarious. The young actors play off each other and Wilson well. The story is generic even if the message is sentimental, but director Steven Brill lets the violence leave a nasty taste in our mouth. Still, Wilson lands just enough laughs to make this passable
Get Smart (Two-Disc Special Edition)Get Smart (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $2.08
*** Another mediocre remake of a 60s TV show. Steve Carell is perfectly cast as Smart. Anne Hathaway holds her own with him, but director Peter Segal makes us wait too long for laughs. The cast is game, but the lack of edge in the jokes make this benign. Still, Carell can wring laughs off his lovable-clueless persona, and Hathaway and him have good chemistry. All in all, it’s summer comfort food
Semi-Pro - Unrated (Two-Disc "Let's Get Sweaty" Edition)Semi-Pro - Unrated (Two-Disc "Let's Get Sweaty" Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $1.07
*** A lesser comedy from the always reliable Will Ferrell. The film has a great premise but finds little to do with it. Ferrell scores time and again, but he gets nobody of equal comic weight in the supporting roles. The story is slapdash at best, with a pointless love story. It's nice to see Will in a raunchy R-rated comedy. He's the only reason this is watchable
BlindnessBlindness
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $1.19
** Director Fernando Meirelles (the brilliant 'City of God') has made a provocative but paltry sci-fi parable. He brings his signature gritty visual style, creating a vivid dystopian world. But there's no point or moral to the story. The film has overly obvious symbolism, the characters are uncompelling, and there are few intriguing twists. Ambitious but uneven and disappointing
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2-Disc Edition)Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $6.25
** Kevin Smith continues to grow older, but not up, with this raunchy sex comedy. He's striving to keep his "edge," but falls into a blackhole of lame and unfunny gross-out jokes. Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson are funny, but hardly anyone else is. Smith's overbearingly crude style and juvenile sentimentality can only be described as lightweight. It's passable, if slow-footed and forgettable
Hancock (Two-Disc Unrated Edition)Hancock (Two-Disc Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $26.49 / Used from: $5.74
** This could have been an edgy satire on superhero conventions and PC in America today. But after a fun first half things go downhill as a "surprise" twist throws a dramatic curveball. All the fun is gone from the film at that point. Director Peter Burg's nervy hand-held cameras don't match the material. Some effects are funny and so is Smith acting obnoxious, but this is a big disappointment
The Love Guru (Two-Disc + Digital Copy)The Love Guru (Two-Disc + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $2.47
** Mike Meyers returns to live-action comedy with this winking farce. Too bad it’s so sloppily put together. Meyers can do this sort of broad over-the-top character as good as anybody, but gets too indulgent here. You know there's a problem when Justin Timberlake is the funniest thing in your movie. Meyers all but kills the potential this had with his comedic self-indulgence. Disappointing
Four Christmases [Blu-ray]Four Christmases [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $11.98
** A wasted opportunity. Director Seth Gordon got lazy and turned this into a cut-and-paste holiday product. He holds Vince Vaughn down when he should be cutting him loose. Reese Witherspoon should have been the heart of this, but gets nothing to do. The film loses all its energy by the third act. Gordon had decent material and a game cast, but he can't make this yuletide farce sing
Street Kings (Special Edition + Digital Copy)Street Kings (Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $2.11
** Another generic thriller. Co-writer/director David Ayer is exploring nothing new here and the story is predictable. The cast is uneven, but Forest Whitaker and rappers The Game and Common are superb in their scenes. But Reeves is clearly miscast here. His acting limitations strain to not be seen but are eventually annoyingly noticable. Generic, pulpy genre fodder
Righteous KillRighteous Kill
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $0.99
** This predictable, dull, suspense-free crime drama has Pacino and De Niro sharing alot of screen time with each other. But 'Heat' this is not. Blame that on a weak script and poor direction from Jon Avnet. The two old boys try to elevate this generic mess, but get no help. The dialogue is laughable, and the supporting cast phones it in. All in all, highly disappointing
Rambo (Special Edition + Digital Copy)Rambo (Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $3.65
** The 'Nam vet comes back more violent than ever in this orgy of gore and endless brutality. It probably wouldn't be so bothersome for a generic shoot 'em up like this if it weren't such a simplistically delivered slab of gore. Stallone is not engaging here, and the story is not engrossing or smart. The final shootout is visceral, but little else is in this instantly forgettable actioner
88 Minutes88 Minutes
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.01
** Another predictable and generic thriller, but also another good turn for Pacino. There are some bursts of excitement and suspense, but director Jon Avnet can't keep it consistent, which greatly hinders the "ticking-clock" aspect of the plot. Pacino chews through co-stars and his dialogue like the towering screen icon he is. Mediocre
The HappeningThe Happening
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $0.90
* It looks like M. Night Shyamalan has finally lost his magic. Here he gives us an absurdly silly, horribly acted, less-than-scary pseudo-zombie movie with an eco message that gets annoyingly preachy before long. After a chilling opening the film becomes plodding. Shyamalan's writing borders on moronic here. Not to mention the lack of scares. A pretentious bore of a doomsday chiller
Rachel Getting MarriedRachel Getting Married
