Best Upgrade for the Money
I upgraded my three "D" cell Maglite with this LED module from Terralux.... Terralux uses the "Cree" technology LED in this module, which gives the highest lumen output you can get. Quite frankly, it is blinding to look at directly. The beam is tight, colorless white, with great penetration and preserves the focusing ability of the Maglite.
Don't mess around with any other LED package for your Maglite, get this one. You will not be disappointed.
Much brighter than anticipated
I purchased this from another vendor to replace the factory bulb in a MagLite I've owned for years and have replaced probably 3 standard bulbs along the way. The amount of light and ability to focus the beam is amazing. When the manufacturer says not to look into the beam of light, they aren't joking. I haven't had this for long so I'm not sure how long the LED will last, only going by what the manufacturer says. So it should be many years. I did try some junky NiMH rechargable D size batteries from Ray O Vac with this LED and 2-D MagLite. They lasted about 30 minutes fully charged before flickering the LED and finally shutting down. (Note that it doesn't dim, just shuts down when batteries are low). I'm guessing I'll get a lot more time with regular alkaline batteries though since I've read, and seem to be experiencing, that the Ray O Vac NiMH D batteries have a low capacity C type battery inside the D casing... cute. Anyway, I'm hooked on this upgrade. If the cost was a little less I'd be even happier, but considering the light output the cost made it worth it for me. I have read that these LEDs can also heat up pretty good and fog the inside of a Mag when used for longer periods and in certain weather. I haven't experienced this yet, haven't tested it that far yet. That may be in the larger 4-6 cell flashlights also?
Very bright, but doesn't always turn on.
Although I am extremely pleased with the intensity of this upgrage (it is SIGNIFICANTLY brighter than the standard Maglite bulb), and the beam focus is decent, this LED upgrade is not reliable. At first, it would slightly unscrew from the base inside the Maglite (3 D-cell light), so I added a tiny drop of non-permanant Loctite thread lock. It worked well for a while, but sometimes wouldn't turn on at all unless you twisted the end of the flashlight, as if you were adjusting the beam. Then it would suddenly turn on. Most recently, it powered off after about 20 minutes of continuous illumination and would not restart, even after 1 hour of cooldown. I removed the upgrade, replaced the original bulb (which worked fine), and then re-inserted the LED upgrade, and suddenly...it works.
In each case, I replaced the batteries with brand-new cells to see if it was a low-voltage issue, but that never fixed anything. I also checked the threads on the inside of the upgrade and the of flashlight itself to see if there is any corrosion that might result in poor operation, but everything was clean and shiny.
It's too bad, because I've always loved my Maglites, and this upgrade is VERY bright, but with the initial cost of the Maglite PLUS the upgrade, it might be better to save up a few more dollars and buy a high quality dedicated LED flashlight. Perhaps I got a bad unit?
