great children's story
food, as a focal point of a story, always manages to break through cultural and other barriers. And I thought it was a perfect jump off point to a wonderful children's story. I loved it and so did my nieces. And so did their mom!
Enchanting
It's absolutely lovely..and delicious too!;) I read it almost in one breath and i was transported to my childhood instantly...
I am not Filipino so I am not entirely familiar with certain foods described in the book. But with the help of the illustration (which's excellent) and a little bit imagination, you hardly have any trouble figuring out what they are and how yummy they must be. It definitely brought back a lot of happy memories for me...briefly...i was that little girl playing (and gorging) in grandma's enchanted kitchen again. I can't wait to share it with my friends...at least those who are still kids at heart. Read it.
strongly recommended
Haluhalo Espesyal delightfully captures two very Filipino characteristics - our enjoyment of the afternoon merienda (similar to afternoon tea) which may range from a cup of coffee to a buffet of native delicacies and the close ties we maintain with our extended family.
I bought the book for my nephews and nieces. The kids enjoyed the heart-warming tale and had fun identifying the colorfully illustrated treats.
It was a great idea to have written the story in both Tagalog and English, and I strongly recommend the book to Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike.
