Customer Reviews
What a joyous Taiko sound!
This is my FAVORITE Taiko CD to listen to as I travel. Soh Daiko is expressive, skilled, creative, and very talented. Plus, their music is crystal clear--I am a taiko player (founder of Mendocino County Taiko in California) and I was able to learn the basic kata for the song "Hiryu Sandan Gaeshi" just from listening to the CD. The fue playing is beautiful and melodic, and from hearing it I learned how to embellish my own playing on other songs. This CD includes Soh Daiko's version of several traditional taiko songs, so it is a great resource for players learning the basic melodies--and wanting to hear how they might be elaborated with skill and joyous energy.
It's the Real Deal
From the first piece to the last on this CD, you can feel the throbbing , pulsating rhythm of the taiko drums. The energy is genuine, they don't try to make it more palatable to our western ears by dulcifying it with strings or synthesizers. Interspersed thru the drumming may be a flute or a bell, but that's it. This CD is the next best thing to watching a taiko ensemble performing live. It's not for everybody, but if you like percussion, purity of form, and appreciate the discipline required to produce such an intricate sound, this recording should be part of your collection.
