Product Description

As one of the 18th century's most influential architecture writer/designers, Swan came to define many conventions of English rococo detail. Included here is a range of floor plans and detail elevations that demonstrates both Swan's unique style, as well as the types of homes prevalent in Georgian England and colonial America. 125 illustrations.

Customer Reviews

For architecture and 18th century history buffs5
This is a very useful book for those interested in the nitty-gritty of Georgian architecture: floor plans for houses of various sizes, drawings of ornamental bridges, and architectural details including designs for whole walls.

limited value for colonial adaptations of Georgian style3
This book has great value for architects of public buildings and monuments, but little guidance on characteristics of the style that can be used in vernacular American adaptations as found on the eastern tidewater. The genius of the many builders and tradesmen of colonial times who were able to simplify and abstract the complex and ornate examples shown in this book will be readily apparent to anyone who has driven the "Plantation Tour" of Virginia's James River. Jefferson's Monticello is another good example.

If limited funds dictate the purchase of only one book on Georgian style, a better choice would be "Get Your House Right" by Marianne Cusato.

Arrived on time, condition as promised.4
I needed a reference on Georgian Architecture for a project. This fit the bill and not too expensive.
