From the Back Cover
If you have a goat, or are thinking about getting one, you probably have many questions about goats:

* What kind of goat should I raise?
* How can I help my goat stay healthy?
* What should I feed my goats?
* Can I breed more goats?
* How do I raise goats for milk or for fiber?

This book tells you practically everything that you will need to know, including how to choose, buy, raise, and show all types of goats, from pets to pack goats. Whether you want to bottle feed your kid goat or shear your fiber goat, Gail Damerow gives you friendly, experienced advice on just what to do. She has also included important charts and checklists, so you will know just what to do and when to do it to take the very best care of your goat.

About the Author
Author Gail Damerow lives in Gainesboro, Tennessee, and operates a small-scale farm raising chickens and other farm animals. She has raised chickens since 1970 when she bought her first home, which "came with chickens." Gail has been a creative writing instructor at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville since 1988. She is the editor of Rural Heritage magazine, a monthly columnist for Dairy Goat Journal, and the author of several Storey titles for adults and children alike which include Your Chickens, Fences for Pasture & Garden, and The Perfect Pumpkin. She has been published in many periodicals, including Acres U.S.A., Backyard Poultry, and Dairy Goat Journal as well.

Gail's book for adults, The Chicken Health Handbook, is considered "Flawless" by Booklist (April 1994). Likewise, Ron Macher from Small Farm Today magazine has said of Gail's A Guide to Raising Chickens: "If you want to raise chickens, you can go out and buy A Guide to Raising Chickens and have it all. This is the best single book on chicken raising I have seen -- it has solid practical advice, good 'how-to' tips, and covers everything. Buy this book."

ANYBODY's guide to goats5
I first bought this book several years ago for an 8-year-old friend who was getting her first goat. I think I have borrowed it back half a dozen times, and regularly recommended it to adults as well as "kids". Although geared toward children, it does NOT talk down to children. It tells the reader (of any age) everything the novice goat owner needs to know without all the extra detail that just gets in the way when you are looking for the basics.

The Best!5
Although this book is meant for children, it is the best of the many books I have bought about goats.

As a "newbie" to goats, I have bought several books to try and expand my knowledge and ensure that I am caring for them correctly, and this was the very best.

I would recommend to all new or prospective goat owners, that this be the first book you purchase, you won't be sorry.

new goat owner handbook5
i recently gave my boyfriend a fainting goat, to join his aging wether which came with his rural property. he is from chicago, and knew nothing about the care, feeding, or otherwise necessary knowledge regarding goats. he has raved about this book, and is reading it cover to cover, sharing enthusiastically about his newly aquired knowledge. i also read it before giving it to him, and agree that although this book appears to be geared toward the younger owner, it is invaluable to anyone starting out as a goat owner, as well as a reference book for those needing reminders.
