Product Description

Readable, practical, a much-needed resource—from a pediatric sports medicine specialist—the only book that focuses on all aspects of sports, exercise, nutrition, and physical activity for kids of all ages and abilities, from infancy through adolescence.

One of the few pediatricians specializing in sports medicine, Dr. Small reminds us that children are not miniature adults; they are physiologically and psychologically different. Parents and coaches need to know what sports are suitable for which age, how to prevent and treat injuries, how to plan sports programs for children with chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes, and the importance of good nutrition and exercise.

Written, organized, and designed for easy reading and reference with Q&As, charts, instructional drawings, and a detailed index, Dr. Small's book addresses kids' needs from infancy through teenage, plus devotes one section to Sports for Every Kid: covering The Young Female Athlete, The Elite Athlete, The Unnatural Athlete, The Overweight Child, The Hyperactive Child, and the Child with a Chronic Disease.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Small is one of only eight pediatric sports specialists in the United States and has a lifelong goal of helping children with sports injuries or medical conditions so that they can participate fully in sports whenever appropriate. A former athlete and coach, Small is an M.D. and the founder of the Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes. This easy-to-read book offers a detailed approach to appropriate sports activities for children of all ages. It will give parents and coaches wonderful bits of information about what sports are suitable for what age, what stretching exercises are appropriate, how to prevent and treat injuries, and how to plan sports programs for children with chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes. The book stresses the importance of good nutrition and exercise and underscores the fact that sports can help improve self-esteem. Each chapter has a Q&A section in which Small answers all the commonly asked questions regarding specific sports issues. Small's work is especially relevant today, as some 30 million children now participate in individual and group sports and because children are becoming more competitive at an earlier age. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries. Tim Delaney, Canisius Coll., Buffalo, NY

KIDS & SPORTS IS FOR PARENTS & COACHES5
This book is about children and the appropriate participation of sports at different age levels. Moreover, it addresses the problems of children with various disabilities, such as asthma, diabetes, etc. for parents and school coaches, to enable them to make decisions regarding their childrens' participation in sports. I believe this is an important and remarkable book that
Dr. Small has made available for those people who are concerned about the well-being of their children

excellent reference5
Dr. Small has covered all bases in this extremely informative, well layed-out book.
His outlines, questions and answers, and diagrams provide a clear cut guide for parents. As a physical therapist that treats adults and children, I am often faced with the same questions Dr. Small has answered in his book. Besides being a great guide for parents, it is an excellent reference for rehab professionals, coaches and any other professionals who work with kids' sports.

user friendly5
This is a vaulable book for any person involved in children's sports. My children will be both safer and better athletes as a result of my reading this book. In addition, although Dr. Small is obviously a highly trained physician, the book is written in s a very user friendly style and highly acccessible to a layman.
I think that this is a great book for people involved with childrens' sports.
