Great Timefiller til the Movie
I read all four issues that comprise this TPB online, and was fairly impressed witht the result. Basically, it tells the story of the Transformers before they come to Earth in search of the All-Spark, and how it ended up here. We see most of the movie cast of robots in their pre-Earth forms, and the differences in their appearance. We also see how Bumblebee lost his voice, in his first encounter with Megatron. Although some of the artwork is a little too dark to see clearly, overall I was pleased with it. I was reminded of the 1980's Marvel series I loved as a kid, although the artwork of today puts it to shame. There is also a tangential "Issue 0" available exclusively at Target, which focuses solely on Bumblebee, for those completists out there.
Falls short of expectations
NO major fighting with Optimus Prime!
I saw the awesome movie before I bought this book and I must say that it doesn't provide a lot of background or history of the Transformers as some readers would expect. I was hoping this book would give an extensive explantion of the events that lead to the beginning of the war between autobots and decepticons, but instead it only gives a brief telling using flashbacks. However, this book does fill in a few gaps in the movie, but nothing really exciting, and only a few new characters are introduced.
Okay, but a bit disappointing... Could be better
This is supposedly a prequel to the 2007 Transformers Movie (which I haven's seen yet, but have read about it).
In the first half, we see lots of quick flashbacks of the Transformers back on Cybertron. Unfortunately, this section is very, very brief and could have been fleshed out more. It was more "telling" than "showing". Basically, Bumblebee quickly narrates the history of the Transformer war and how Megatron and Decepticons got to Earth, yadda yadda. I WISH the author would have fleshed extended such scenes. I really wanted to see how Megatron co-ruled with Optimus Prime, and I wanted to see the gradual change of Megatron into an insane/obssesive Decepticon leader. I wanted to see more of the Autobot's reactions to Bumblebee's "sacrifice". There was so much they could have done there.
The next half of the book focuses almost entirely on the humans--the military, the government finding frozen Megatron, and Sam's crazy grandfather, how Sam got the glasses, etc. This part, which is a large portion of the book is dull and rushed at the same time. Lots of talking and barely any robot action. I feel nothing for the characters because it rushes by so fast. The scenes are mostly humans talking about the situation and maybe a few explosions.
I would recommend reading the novel Ghosts of Yesterday. At least that book had more robot action and is a much better "prequel".
