Atlas of Anatomy (Thieme Anatomy)Atlas of Anatomy (Thieme Anatomy) by Anne Gilroy
Buy new: $56.38 / Used from: $45.42
Unlike Netter's, which specializes in a hundred labels an image and overly colorful imagery, Thieme's images are carefully selected to reflect particular anatomy and labeled accordingly. With captions that teach as you learn, primary learning is far less painful from this atlas than Netter's. The multiple 3d views of vasculature don't hurt either.
Head and Neuroanatomy (THIEME Atlas of Anatomy) (THIEME Atlas of Anatomy Series)Head and Neuroanatomy (THIEME Atlas of Anatomy) (THIEME Atlas of Anatomy Series) by Michael Schuenke
Buy new: $55.52 / Used from: $47.19
With all the benefits of the general Atlas of Anatomy by Thieme, with a clear focus on the head and neuroanatomy. There's much more to the captions included in this text. While we didn't learn physiology with our anatomy, for those that want to give the anatomy some relevance, this is a unique and helpful anatomy atlas.
Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body (Color Atlas of Anatomy (Rohen))Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body (Color Atlas of Anatomy (Rohen)) by Johannes W Rohen
Buy new: $59.00 / Used from: $46.95
This anatomy atlas contains color photos of labeled cadavers. These are the "perfect" dissections that you are unlikely to see as a whole in your anatomy lab. Nonetheless, the structures pinned on exams tend to be the best representations of each structure available. Use this as a supplement to lab time when studying for exams and pre-dissection.
BRS Gross Anatomy (Board Review Series)BRS Gross Anatomy (Board Review Series) by Kyung Won Chung
Buy new: $31.23 / Used from: $23.96
BRS tends to be a hit-or-miss series as the text is presented in outline format without an exposition. What makes this book a gem, then? The questions! After each section, there's many many questions designed to test your understanding. This is an excellent way to study, and given the sheer number of questions, you are unlikely to run out before you master these concepts.
BRS Cell Biology and Histology (Board Review Series)BRS Cell Biology and Histology (Board Review Series) by Leslie P Gartner
Buy new: $28.66 / Used from: $21.85
Another clear and helpful text from BRS. Again, for many, this served as our main text for both cell biology and histology, as our professor provided his own images. The diagrams are clear and the information is solid. Buy this unless you need exposition, because this book is in outline format.
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry, North American Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series)Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry, North American Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series) by Pamela C Champe
Buy new: $46.20 / Used from: $24.99
For many in our class, this book was our only textbook for biochemistry. It's colorful, the exposition is informal and clear, and there's no junk here padding the information.
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, 4th Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series)Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, 4th Edition (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series)
Buy new: $49.52 / Used from: $32.00
Here are your basics in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics followed by chapters on drugs separated into their categories. This book is more concise than Katzung, with the concession that it's less complete. Its color and summary style of presenting information makes it a nice review.
Pharmacology Recall (Recall (Wolters Kluwer))Pharmacology Recall (Recall (Wolters Kluwer))
Buy new: $35.95 / Used from: $36.47
Another gimmicky book that should be wonderful for review time. This book separates the drugs into classes. One one half of every page, the book asks a short question: "What is hypertension?" Opposite this question is a short answer. Following this format will keep you engaged if you intend to read the book and aids in self-testing if that's your approach.
Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Medmaster)Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Medmaster) by Mark Gladwin
Buy new: $28.01 / Used from: $18.95
Everyone loves this book. Just give in and buy it. It's clear, it's got cute cartoons. You'll remember them later and you'll re-read this book many times.
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Microbiology (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series)Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Microbiology (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series) by Richard A Harvey
Buy new: $46.71 / Used from: $26.99
I used both this and the Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple text for my class. I crave color and this provides it, as well as clear categories and another format.
The Immune System 3eThe Immune System 3e by Peter Parham
Buy new: $71.53 / Used from: $68.99
We used an older edition of this text as the assigned reading for immunology. I found the text clear and unpretentious. Certainly immunology is a dense topic, and this book is adequate for learning.
Neuroscience, Fourth EditionNeuroscience, Fourth Edition by Dale Purves
Buy new: $72.16 / Used from: $59.75
Purves is generally clear. This is a complete text and clarified every topic covered in our neuroscience module. Be aware that this should be your neuroscience text. It is not a complete neuroscience atlas.
Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple (3rd Edition; Book & CD-ROM)Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple (3rd Edition; Book & CD-ROM) by Stephen Goldberg
Buy new: $15.50 / Used from: $14.00
This tiny book makes learning neuroanatomy intuitive and relevant. You can read it a few times during your course.
Cardiovascular Physiology (LANGE Physiology Series)Cardiovascular Physiology (LANGE Physiology Series) by David Mohrman
Buy new: $30.76 / Used from: $16.99
I found this book to be painfully boring, but if you master the information you understand the way the electricity and plumbing work in the heart. That was the goal, right? It's short and the second read-through is nothing like primary learning.
Pathophysiology of Heart Disease: A Collaborative Project of Medical Students and Faculty, 4th EditionPathophysiology of Heart Disease: A Collaborative Project of Medical Students and Faculty, 4th Edition
Buy new: $31.16 / Used from: $17.94
Possibly the best-written textbook we use our first year. Lilly's style is clear, the information is presented concisely, and pictures and tables enhance your understanding of the text. Very readable and re-readable.
Rapid Interpretation of EKG's, Sixth EditionRapid Interpretation of EKG's, Sixth Edition by Dale Dubin
Buy new: $30.42 / Used from: $26.00
EKG seems like a magical art until you read a clear text with great pictures that distills that magic into logical sense. Whlie I gained an initial understanding from Lilly, this book's simple approach to EKG added enormously to my fund of knowledge. With its design, it's impossible to stay stuck on the same page reading it over and over. The pages turn themselves.
Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, Seventh EditionRobbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, Seventh Edition by Vinay Kumar
Buy used from: $39.99
I bought the giant Robbin's Pathology although some in my class have successfully used the Robbin's Basic Pathology text as well. Don't be intimidated by the sheer volume of the book. The chapters are well-written and the pictures unbeatable for learning pathology. I hate learning a topic without background, and this book provides it.
First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 2009: A Student to Student Guide (First Aid USMLE)First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 2009: A Student to Student Guide (First Aid USMLE) by Tao Le
Buy used from: $38.12
Skeletal review book. Color in, highlight, add notes. This is a great review book with relevant facts that you can use while studying for exam time. When you start seriously preparing for boards, you'll be grateful for your annotations, color, and familiarity with this ubiquitous text.
