![]() | Watchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $7.96 Alan Moore is considering one of the best, if not the best, writers in the comic industry. This is why. Essential reading for anyone interested in comics.

![]() | From Hell by Alan Moore
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $19.99 Another of Moore's best. Not easily accessible to a new comics reader, but still absolutely brilliant.

![]() | Ghost World: The Special Edition by Daniel Clowes
Buy new: $16.16 / Used from: $8.77 Much better (and very different) than the movie. The best portrayal of American teenage ennui I've ever seen. Considered one of Clowes' best, with good reason.
|
![]() | Ice Haven by Daniel Clowes
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $4.57 In my experience this book was always a little underrated, at least compared to Clowes' other work. One of my favorites, with Clowes displaying a huge range of styles.

![]() | Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth
Buy used from: $26.98 An astounding accomplishment. Words can't properly describe this book, because of its very visual nature. Some people find Ware's stories to be a little depressing, but his design work is - without question - unrivaled.
|
![]() | Quimby the Mouse (ACME Novelty Library Series) by Chris Ware
Buy used from: $2.94 Another brilliant book by Chris Ware, though not as good (or heavy) as Jimmy Corrigan.
|
![]() | The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1) by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $18.48 The only comic to ever win the Pulitzer, for what it's worth. Another book widely considered 'essential reading.' Very good, though perhaps a bit overrated.
|
![]() | Palestine: The Special Edition by Joe Sacco
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $16.98 A better portrait of the Palestine conflict than any dry text could ever accomplish.
|
![]() | Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $7.83 This book is a little inaccessible - the more well-read you are, the more you'll enjoy it. Bechdel drops lots of literary names without sounding like a scholarly snob, which is a pretty big accomplishment when you think about it.
