It might seem redundant to dismiss the fourth and final Twilight novel as escapist fantasy--but how else could anyone look at a romance about an ordinary, even clumsy teenager torn between a vampire and a werewolf, both of whom are willing to sacrifice their happiness for hers? Flaws and all, however, Meyer's first three novels touched on something powerful in their weird refraction of our culture's paradoxical messages about sex and sexuality. The conclusion is much thinner, despite its interminable length. Everygirl Bella achieves her wishes quickly (marriage and sex, in that order, are two, and becoming an immortal is another), and once she becomes a vampire it's almost impossible to identify with her. But that's not the main problem. Essentially, everyone gets everything they want, even if their desires necessitate an about-face in characterization or the messy introduction of some back story. Nobody has to renounce anything or suffer more than temporarily--in other words, grandeur is out. This isn't about happy endings; it's about gratification. A sign of the times? Ages 12-up. Customer Reviews
Breaking Dawn: a huge disappointment
Breaking Dawn was a huge disappointment. Not only because of how characters totally were out of character, or because of how Stephenie Meyer herself broke her own rules about her vampires, but also because of the way it ended. Yes, it had a perfect happy ending. But it was too happy, too lovey-dovey. No one sacrificed anything. No one died except for a character that nobody cared about. And everyone got what they wanted without any effort. That's not plausible.
In conclusion, the entire book was so cloying, and everything was so perfect, with out-of-character characters, that Breaking Dawn ends up being unbelievable.
Sadly disappointing
Sadly, as much as I have been looking forward to this I am so disappointed. This book is a huge departure from the rest of the series in the worst way. The plot has more holes than a golf course. The characters are very different and oddly one dimensional. It is not to say there are not redeeming qualities but I think that the ridiculous outweigh the good. What bothered me most is the lack of power behind Bella/Edward. I can't believe that since the other books are so centered on their love story, that this one is so..not (for lack of a better word). It is a shame what has happened to Edward's character in this book. He is no longer the witty, humorous, romantic vampire we all fell in love with. He has been reduced to an agonized chuckling background character. I wish it ended at Eclipse now. =/
Salvage the first three books...Don't read this one!
The Twilight Saga was my favorite series I'd ever read. Reading Breaking Dawn has decapitated that obsession. Things within this book will ruin your love for the others. Relationships built over hundreds of pages will never be the same again. I'm not even sure if pretending it doesn't exist will help. If I hadn't read it, Yeah...all would be well, but once you read it, there is no going back.
Take my advice. Go read some fan fiction, and pick your favorite ending, and most likely it will be better than this. Seriously...all of the characters could have died, and I would have felt better about this book.
