Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
The only missing ingredient here are the obligatory ants, in this cheery animation of the lyrics to John Bratton's lilting 1907 song. Various bear families are seen bustling about Kozikowski's cozy cottages in preparation for the outing. After trekking across an inviting, patchwork-quilt landscape, the hungry bruins arrive at a pine-framed glade and spread out a lavish repast. Badminton and butterfly catching are among the day's pursuits, until "at six o'clock their mommies and daddies will take them home to bed." Providing extra fun are the alternating cut-out half pages, as children can truly view "both sides of the situation." Though the artist's sparkling colors and intricate details create an amiable impression overall, the book doesn't quite measure up to its beguiling source--a certain flatness creeps in, owing perhaps to a lack of characterization in the leading players. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3 --A picture-book version of the 1907 song by John Bratton. Here, comfortable-looking toy bears plan and execute their outing with great thoroughness and enthusiasm. The illustrations progress using the half-page device made familiar by John Goodall, but these cutouts are large and horizontal, as well as irregular in shape, with contours that vary with each double-page spread. The pictures are on heavier stock than Alexandra Day's paintings for the song (Green Tiger, 1983), but both have appeal. This book contains the melody--without chord notation--on the endpapers, whereas the earlier version does not. --Holly Sanhuber, Muskego Public Library, WI

A beautiful book!5
"If you go down in the woods today You're sure of a big surprise If you go down in the woods today You'd better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain because Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic."

This is such a fun book to read to my kids! The rhyming verse has a nice rythem to it, but its the pictures we enjoy the most. They make you feel like you are peeking through the trees at this wonderful picnic! This book is a treasure!

Beautiful book to share with your child5
If you and your child (or even if you don't have a child) love the song and story of the Teddy Bear's picnic, then you will adore this book.

The text is pretty straight forward - as well all expect it to be. But the illustrations are just delightful - full colour on every page, teddies everywhere you look and getting into all manner of interesting things. This is what is so charming about this book - the sheer delight of finding a bear and seeing what it is doing - is it eating cake? Climbing a tree? Falling asleep? Avoiding the children in disguise?

It may be a difficult book to find, but it is just lovely, and well worth the effort.

A superb book!5
My 1 year old son loves this book. I usually sing it to him. I find the illustrations to be most stimulating and rewarding. I highly recommend this book!!
