Do your students often struggle with difficult novels and other challenging texts? Do they think one reading of a work is more than enough? Do they primarily comprehend at a surface-level, and are they frequently unwilling or unable to discover the deeper meaning found in multi-layered works? Do you feel that you are doing more work teaching the novel than they are reading it?
Building on twenty years of teaching language arts, Kelly Gallagher, author of Reading Reasons, shows how students can be taught to successfully read a broad range of challenging and difficult texts with deeper levels of comprehension. In Deeper Reading, Kelly shares effective, classroom-tested strategies that enable your students to:
- accept the challenge of reading difficult books;
- move beyond a "first draft" understanding of the text into deeper levels of reading;
- consciously monitor their comprehension as they read;
- employ effective fix-it strategies when their comprehension begins to falter;
- use meaningful collaboration to achieve deeper understanding of texts;
- think metaphorically to deepen their reading comprehension;
- reach deeper levels of reflection by understanding the relevance the book holds for themselves and their peers;
- use critical thinking skills to analyze real-world issues.
Kelly also provides guidance on effective lesson planning that incorporates strategies for deeper reading.
Funny, poignant, and packed with practical ideas that work in real classrooms, Deeper Reading is a valuable resource for any teacher whose students need new tools to uncover the riches found in complex texts.

one of the better English instruction guides
This supposedly was the much-hyped book of the 2004 NCTE conference and I can understand why: if you're looking for something more usable in your classroom than Tovani or Probst or Wilhelm, Gallagher will give you a lot of ideas. He also, as seems to be the case with all high school English teachers who write these types of books, gets drunk on the personal anecdote; they could have scaled this book down by about 50 pages--easily--and been no worse off (do we really need another "reading is like driving a car" analogy?). Still, the author has some inspiring stuff, and he's not just offering the usual "use a kwl chart before reading" crap; his ideas are directed, relevant, valuable to comprehension--they're what English teachers in 2005 should be doing. I would particularly recommend this book to educators of 9th and 10th graders: Gallagher teaches freshman, and since his activities stem from that teaching, the lower grades are most inclined towards his ideas.
Deeper Reading: Comprehending Challenging Texts, 4-12
While other authors such as Harvey & Goudvis, Keene & Zimmerman, and Tovani offer stronger strategy instruction, this book provides many practical, classroom activities to support strategic reading. Gallagher brings the perspective of a practicing teacher to the text, which makes his insights and activities realistic and useful. I recommend this text to teachers who are looking for support with content area reading in their classrooms.
AMAZING!!!
I teach 8th grade Reading and 6th grade Language Arts. This book is amazing! It has great lesson ideas and really opened my eyes to perspectives I had not thought of before. I cannot wait to use these ideas in my classroom--I am a better reading teacher for having read this book! Ger his other book too of Motivational Mini-Lessons. It is great for reluctant readers to realize the importance of literacy! I cannot wait to see more from him!
