From the Manufacturer
Maglite Brings LED's into Focus MAGLITE LED upgrade module with MAG-LED technology uses 3-watt LED. Upgrade your existing 2 cell C or D Maglite flashlight to the new MAG-LED technology. Benefits include: Intelligent Energy Source Management, balancing high brightness with efficient power usage. Upgrade modules are cell number/size specific 2 cell, 3 cell, or 4 cell and must match to a 2, 3, or 4 cell Maglite flashlight. Unlike "LED retrofits" that are not made or approved by Mag, these upgrade modules were engineered by Mag and are factory-authorized. Their use cannot affect the warranty on your Mag-Lite flashlight. Upgrade Module 4 D/C cell.

An Upgrade Worthy of a Maglite
I am very pleased with this LED upgrade. The light output is significantly brighter than the standard krypton bulb and is on par or better than the Xenon "Mag-num" bulbs. In fact, I've found the output to be on par with the 6D Maglite with a krypton bulb. I've also read the 3D cell updgrade LED gives the biggest bang for the buck, even surpassing the 4D for brightness. Another benefit is this is a "drop-in" replacement and maintains the same focusing characteristics of a regular bulb.
I estimate the batteries last twice as long as with the standard bulb, but I don't have empirical evidence to back that up. Unfortunately, Maglite doesn't supply the wattage of their incadescent bulbs, which makes direct comparisons harder to make.
If you own a Maglite, I recommend this upgrade. It is a siginificant improvement over the regular bulbs and certainly gives its money's worth of light. The reason I gave it four rather than five stars is because of issues with the heat sink that may diminish light intensity, as well as that the wide angle focus still has the characteristic black hole in the center. The last point may have to do with the reflector, which is not optimized for LEDs (on the regular one).
One final note. This upgrade does NOT work with rechargeable batteries. The bulb expects 1.4-1.5 volts from each battery to work, where rechargeables tend to only give 1.2 volts per cell. Hopefully Mag with come up with a voltage controlled version that will allow for this.
Well worth the money
I first bought the Nite-Ize LED Upgrade for D cell maglites, but it hardly puts out any light. It's pretty dim but will literally run for a week at that same dimness, it has it's purpose and was half the cost of this. It is useful for maneuvering around a dark house (like a nitelite), but you can't really "see" anything well enough to do work.
I finally forked over the money this 3 Watt LED upgrade at Mega-Lo-Mart and boy am I impressed. According to flashlightreviews website it's brighter than the stock bulb and will maintain that brightness for 48 hours! I have to agree, my batteries were at about 50% (judging by the dim beam of the conventional bulb) i put the LED in and my maglite has never been brighter, and the beam is still focusable, I even think the beam geometry is better with the LED than the stock bulb. I'm totally impressed. Hopefully it will pay for itself in batteries.
I've found specs that claim this throws 7500 (86.60) LUX and has an overall outputs of 4750 (47.50) LUMENS. (whatever that means)
Better Brighter Light
This 3 Watt LED really transformed my 2D cell Mag light! The old bulb caused a shadow effect, and had yellowish hue. This 3 watt LED improved an already excellent designed flashlight. The 3 Watt LED is bright, and easy to focus to a solid spotlight, to a smooth transition flood / area light. Highly recommended.
