![]() | The Mantle by Agalloch
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.99 This is a brilliant album. It's metal, though it lacks a lot of what people normally associate with metal and that's part of what makes it so intriguing. It's laden with folk elements, often using acoustic guitars. It's very atmospheric; conjuring a feeling of isolation somewhere in remote Scandinavia.

![]() | Colors by Between the Buried and Me
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.59 As much as I love Agalloch's The Mantle, this album is even more brilliant. Quite frankly, this is one of the most amazing albums I've stumbled across recently. Any fan of Dream Theater MUST listen to this RIGHT NOW. It's much heavier, with many moments of blast beats, growling and trem picking.
This album is a landmark in metal.

Sort of chilled out IDM. It works both as background music, but is complex enough to sit down and listen to start to finish.

Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.51 Some people consider Death to be the beginning of death metal. Schulinder said he wasn't the first. He definitely was one of the first to look at metal in a progressive way.

|
![]() | Shostakovich: The String Quartets
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $10.00 Shostakovch is my favorite 20th century composer. He used dissonance perfectly while maintaining tonality. His quartets were all masterpieces, with my favorites being No 8 and No 10. No 8 was written as an epitaph for himself.

His music is so honest and heartfelt. It's a truly intimate experience listening to this album.
|
![]() | Blackwater Park by Opeth
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $15.00 Opeth are masters of prog metal. Mikael Akerfeldt's vocal work is epic. The growls are demonic, yet sound totally natural. His clean singing is excellent as well.
Opeth understand that music needs to be balanced. The heavy parts have more meaning because of the clean sections.

Trance has a nasty tendency of not being musically interesting...it's not the case here. This is perfect at...whatever it is.
|
