About the Author
Benjawan Poomsan Becker was born in Bangkok and spent her childhood in Yasothon, a small province in Northeast Thailand. Her family is ethnic Laotian, so she grew up speaking both Thai and Lao. She graduated from Khon Kaen University in Thailand in 1990, with a B.A. in English. Benjawan gained extensive experience teaching Thai to foreigners while studying for her M.A. in Japan with the Japan-Thailand Trade Association and Berlitz Language School, and in the US with Thai temples, Stanford University and private students. She now resides in Berkeley, California where she continues to write and publish books on the Thai and Lao languages. Her books include "Thai for Beginners", "Thai for Intermediate Learners", "Thai for Advanced Readers", "Thai-English/English-Thai Dictionary for Non-Thai Speakers", "Improving Your Thai Pronunciation", "Practical Thai Conversation DVD Series", the popular "Speak Like a Thai Series" and many other titles on the Thai language.

Great Tune Up for Former Thai Speakers5
All the volumes in this series are great for review of the language. I'm going back to Thailand after 20 years of being out of the country. I was once fairly fluent, but I've forgotten a lot of vocabulary. This is a great help for getting back the language quickly. It is for advanced speakers, however. If you couldn't speak Thai before, you're probably still not going to speak Thai after getting these CDs. There are some aspects of the language that can only be learned by being there. Nonetheless, this will broaden your vocabulary, and give some good practice.

quirky but useful5
some very useful phrases and words, and the bonus rude slang at the back is worth the purchase!... and the five stars...some choice naughty stuff...explicit, funny and colourful, very Thai.

Outrageous Thai is better!1
I bought both this one and T.F. Rhoden's "Outrageous Thai" in BKK last weekend at Kinokuniya at the same time, thinking I could learn a bit more colorful language. I am about a low intermediate in Thai language, and I think that both are good for just about anyone at any level.

However, I was very disappointed with Becker's version of how to handle slang in the Thai language. I didn't feel like there were a lot of new words in this one and most of them were pretty tame.

If you really want to learn Thai slang than I would recommend "Outrageous Thai" instead. This guy has some really crazy language in there, and what I really like is that he explains how to use it and when to use it. My gut feeling is that because the guy is a foreigner, he didn't feel like he had to hold back on the language, whereas Becker probably feels more responsible to keeping a good image of her language and country.

That said, I love all of Becker's other books like "Thai for Beginners"; but honestly this on just falls short of the mark!
