Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Ever wonder why the audiobook genre has grown so significantly over the past few years? One answer is the prolific amount of pablum offered by pop psychologists such as talk-show self-help guru Jeffers (Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, Audio Reviews, LJ 4/1/93) with her latest approach to dealing with fears and moving forward in life with confidence, action, and love. Some of her dozen helpful tools include ignoring the voice of the lower self; listening to the voice of the higher self; verbalizing affirmations, mantra-like, over and over, like "giving it away" and other similarly silly nicknames for techniques targeted toward the depressed, those hopelessly consumed by self-pity, and, of course, anyone with time to watch her on Oprah. Trite, glib clich?s abound here in one of the better examples of useless psychobabble; the "good-witch-of-the-north," syrupy delivery is at worst embarrassing and at best ridiculous. Set aside the candles and the crystals and ignore this foolish glop. Instead, to be of significant help to those with legitimate need for professional guidance, librarians should provide the substantial works of such stalwarts as Viktor Frankl (Man's Search for Meaning, Audio Reviews, LJ 3/1/96) or Stephen Covey (The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, S. & S., 1989). Not recommended.

From AudioFile
Listeners (and readers) who enjoyed Jeffers's FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY will appreciate this practical guide for moving a step forward. Jeffers presents a brief synopsis of her earlier work and then moves into exercises to assist the listener in facing his or her specific fears. There can be no doubt about Jeffers's earnest conviction and sincerity. As with many authors who are not trained performers, Jeffers's voice becomes a bit tired and strained from time to time. Nonetheless, her voice remains relatively easy to listen to and understand. The tape includes sufficient pauses so that the listener is not constantly turning the tape off during its short exercises. WORTH THE $$$5
Wow, Dr. Jeffers. Excellent work. I felt depressed and lonely about some recent health news (infertility/blocked fallopian tubes). I started to become afraid about many things in life, as result of the "crisis" at 30! I remembered your tape from long ago and so I purchased it, the 4 box set. Loved it. Within days, I was able to see past the fear and get to the root. I listen to your tapes weekly as a "refresher". You're a blessing in my life. I appreciate you and your work.

SUSAN DOES IT AGAIN!!!! 5
A great extension to "Feel the fear and do it anyway." Susan lists a lot of different excerises that can help you get better in time.

She gets right to the point of the matters again.

"Feel the fear and do it anyway" is still a classic. I would highly reccemend for all of you to read her first one before this one. However, do what you like. THis is a great sequel but I still found "FEel the fear and do it anyway" to being the best self help book of all time. This is still a great book, but it's just a big extension from her first classic.

One of the more rememerable moments in this book was when she says over and over again. "What a great reason to do the exercises!"

It's a great sequel and will help you all that are suffering from anxiety and depressive related illnesses. You just gotta give it time and make sure you aren't allowing your fears to get in your way of making you healthier and stronger.

A Blueprint for Personal and Spiritual Growth5
Employing a wealth of popular self help and ideas of spirtual leaders, and step by step written exercises with an easy-to-use format, Susan Jeffers guides the reader on an exciting journey towards self-reliance and inner strength. A major focus is the identification of defeatist thinking and the substitution and additional of life-affirming beliefs; a method that is well grounded in modern psychology.
