Product Description

The MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air each have a Mini DisplayPort that allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.Use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to connect your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air to a standard analog monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a VGA connector or cable. Review the documentation or check with the manufacturer of your monitor to make sure you're choosing the right adapter.

My home display uses DVI (which is a far more modern standard than VGA), but I often need this adapter for running presentations. Other reviewers have complained about several problems with this adapter. However, Apple recently released a firmware update, which you can download at http://support.apple.com/downloads/_Mini_DisplayPort_to_VGA_Firmware_Update and run (you must have the adapter plugged in and connected to a display) to solve everything. After that, it should work perfectly.

Didn't Work Right for Me... But AppleCare Helped.4
I got this adapter to connect my MacBook to my 24" Gateway monitor. I wanted VGA because I already have the DVI connection on the monitor tied up with my PS3, and wanted to retain the ability to switch between the two sources.

Well, I was kind of bummed by the performance of this adapter with my MacBook/monitor combo. I'm sure it's not the adapter's fault, but in my experience the MacBook didn't want to output the native 1920x1200 @60Hz my monitor wanted. Instead, when the MacBook said it was outputting that resolution, the monitor's status told me that it was receiving 1280x1024 @60Hz. Naturally, this looked horrible.

I dialed down the output a bit, to 1600x1200, and other resolutions (even 1440x900) and in those modes the output was correct, but I got a wavy, unstable image on my monitor. Sometimes it would stabilize for a while, but it was still not native resolution and thus looked pretty chunky.

A call to AppleCare eventually solved my problem. The solution? I had to use the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter instead, and use that DVI connection on my monitor. It seems that with the new MacBook the analog output isn't quite compatible with my monitor for some reason. While my previous MacBook handled VGA output with no problems, this one refused to play nice with my Gateway monitor.

My suggestion is to use this VGA adapter only if you have no other choice. If you have DVI available as an option on your monitor, you may want to go with Apple's other adapter, as digital output shines on this MacBook. It's too bad, but new technology sometimes leaves old tech in the dust.

I will hang on to this adapter, though. I may have better luck with other monitors or HDTVs in the future.
