While Annie Oakley & Executive Suite are the draws, the lesser known films are more than worth it, with Jeopardy being an incredibly thriller. Stanwyck’s tough as nails persona effortlessly goes toe to toe with everyone from Clark Gable to James Mason.

Out of Print. Never made a lot of pictures with Warner brothers, and those that were are mediocre and forgettable. One has to question why this set was released, more than why it’s no longer in print.

Throughout these films the King of Hollywood is paired up with Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner, and Grace Kelly. From courtroom dramas to high seas adventures we find sexual tension, romance, and male bonding are in full force... then an earthquake.

The stuffy costume drama “Elisabeth and Essex,” is painfully dull. Making up for this are the biggest of Flynn’s swashbuckling fare. Starting the set is Flynn’s breakout role, Captain Blood, which is nicely followed by his adventure masterpiece The Sea Hawk.

The Oscar winning Sergeant York gets the deserved 2-disc treatment. Other performances like his uncompromising architect in Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead nicely compliment the westerns, and the Wreck of the Mary Deare has some marvellous special effect sequences.

Mister Roberts is the highest regarded one, but all are worth viewing. The main problem is all these films are readily available, even appearing in other Signature series (The Wrong man – Hitchcock), there are better ways to purchase bulk Fonda performances.

...But Raft did turn down Maltese Falcon. These films were made between 1941 and 1944... with the exception of Falcon, the war is always prominently featured, but Bogie managed to make them timeless.

The Naked Spur is arguably the best of the celebrated westerns Stewart made with director Anthony Mann, and the main draw of this box. Stewart is always outstanding, even if you can think of a few dozen of his performances you’d rather watch.

Wizard of Oz has been released in a number of special editions since this, and the delightful Love Finds Andy Hardy was just reissued with an Andy Hardy box.

Shocked that an actor could become president? He wasn’t much of an actor. Films like Kings Row suggest he could have been, but these are largely lacklustre supporting performances. All the historic lines from “Win one for the Gipper” to “Where’s the rest of me?” are on file. While the Killers isn’t accounted for, any other Ronald Regan film you’d want is. ...also no monkeys.
