Product Description

In this book, 42 teachers recount the ways they went beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of their students. A first-grade teacher describes how she was able to undergo radiation and chemotherapy without missing a day of school because her students gave her energy and courage. A drama teacher in Houston explains that she makes casting decisions knowing that sometimes the role may be better for the student than the student is for the role. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a teacher recalls how he used a student’s suicide as an opportunity for other students to reflect and ultimately succeed. An extensive parent and teacher resource guide is included and a portion of the profits will be donated to charities listed in the book.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Waldman, a teacher and the author of, most recently, Teens with the Courage to Give (2000), presents essays by 42 incredible public-school teachers who articulate their passion for a crucial but underappreciated profession. Teaching at schools from a geographic cross section of urban, suburban, and rural school districts with an array of students, these teachers recall the mundane and spectacular events of their school days: helping children cope with family instability and death, using everything from animal care to fashion shows to reach unreachable children, visiting a dying student in the hospital, and continuing to teach while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Teachers ranging from veterans to a young AmeriCorps participant have students who display a range of physical, emotional, mental, and academic challenges. This is an inspiring book that offers the teachers' perspective on why and how they continue to do the hard work of nurturing and educating children. Parents and teachers alike will enjoy these powerful essays. Vanessa Bush

Get Inspired!5
I'm a teacher, and I feel energized! I've been reading Jackie Waldman's book...a few pages at a time. It's hard to put down. I don't know if I love the teachers or the kids more! It's very obvious we are learning from each other. If you love kids, read this book! If you are a teacher or want to know a few great ones, read this book. I hope you will feel the love that has gone into Teachers with the Courage to Give. Thank you Jackie for a great tribute.
