Kurosawa made several movies that people still talk about today - Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Ikiru. Of all his movies, Seven Samurai is still my favorite. Rashomon is close 2nd. This is the longest movie I've ever seen (more than 3 hours), but was fully engaged every minute of it.
The Godfather DVD Collection (The Godfather/ The Godfather - Part II/ The Godfather - Part III)The Godfather DVD Collection (The Godfather/ The Godfather - Part II/ The Godfather - Part III)

What can I say about the greatest movie trilogy of all time? Godfather I and II and IMDB's #2 and 3. Enough said. Younger generation movie fans wonder what all the commotion is about. Read the book, too.
Once Upon a Time in America (Two-Disc Special Edition)Once Upon a Time in America (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $15.84
I read that it took Sergio Leone almost 10 years to make this movie. Truly epic! After watching it, watch it again with the commentary. If you liked it, check out other Leone films - Good, Bad, Ugly, Once upon a time in the west.
Bicycle Thieves (Criterion Collection)Bicycle Thieves (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $21.99
As a father and a husband, movie like this makes you think how valuable your family is. One of the greatest movies I've ever seen! If you liked it, check out Umberto D as well.
Tokyo Story - Criterion CollectionTokyo Story - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $18.95
Yasujiro Ozu made many great movies in his life. However, Ozu movies are acquired taste, just like sushi. We're so used to Western style of movies - action, twist&turn in plot, movie stars, etc. Ozu movies are not like that at all. Cameras are stationary. Plot is usually family-oriented. No surprise ending. What makes it so good? Start with Tokyo Story, then move onto others - they are all good!
To Kill a Mockingbird (Universal Legacy Series)To Kill a Mockingbird (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $11.54
Great book became a greater movie through one man: Gregory Peck. If I had a son, I would have named him Atticus. Taught me more about life beside the Bible.
12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $7.37
No action. No change of scenery. Just 12 people locked up in a jury room on the hottest day of the year, discussing a seemingly insignificant murder case, about to decide on a fate of troubled abused teenager. #9 in IMDB top movies. How can that be? You decide.
The Shawshank Redemption (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]The Shawshank Redemption (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $14.87
This is the IMDB's #1 movie! I don't know if it's the greatest movie of all time, but it's definitely fan favorite. It's definitely my favorite movie of all time. Never been so pleasantly surprised at the end of the movie.
The Shining (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Shining (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.95
I'm a horror movie fan to begin with. This movie tops the list of my all-time favorite horror movies. If you liked it, check out other Kubrick films (my other favorite Kubrick film is Lolita.)
Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $6.52
When it was first made, it was just one of the movies that WB was making week after week. After 65 years, this movie is still in every movie list's top 10. Great movie!
Rashomon - Criterion CollectionRashomon - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $13.50
In my opinion, Rashomon is one of the greatest movies ever made. I can't believe this was made nearly 60 years ago, but is still extremely relevant today.
Cinema Paradiso (Limited Collector's Edition)Cinema Paradiso (Limited Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $24.39
I like the original version. Some people like the new version because it gives you a closure and you don't have to wonder any more. One of the greatest movies I've seen.
The Apartment (Collector's Edition)The Apartment (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.25
Although principal actors are before my time, this movie allowed me to truly appreciate actors and actresses of previous generation - Jack Lemmon and Shirly MacLaine. Billy Wilder also made Sunset Blvd, Sabrina, Some like it hot, Double Indemnity, Seven year itch. All great movies. I happened to like Apartment above all else.
City of GodCity of God
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.25
One of few movies that truly shocked me. Eye-opening experience of what young people go through in other parts of the world just to survive.
My Life as a Dog - Criterion CollectionMy Life as a Dog - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $17.99
Lasse Hallstrom made some of the most memorable movies I've ever seen. Beside this one, I also loved What's eating Gilbert grape, Cider house rules, and Shipping news. Fantastic movie.
On the Waterfront (Special Edition)On the Waterfront (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $10.00
If it wasn't for Elia Kazan, I don't think Marlon Brando would have been a superstar that he was. After 55 years, this movie is still very relevant today - doing the right thing, even if it hurts. Elia Kazan also made Streetcar named desire and East of Eden, among others.
Jules and Jim - Criterion CollectionJules and Jim - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $19.77
Critics say that this marks the beginning of modern cinema. I'm not the one to agree or disagree. However, it's a haunting tale of friendship, love and sacrifice.
The Silence of the Lambs (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Silence of the Lambs (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $5.78
There are many great horrow movies. My personal favorite is the Stanley Kubrick's Shining. This is my other favorite film. Another fantastic adaptation of a great book. It still gives me chills.
Rear Window (Universal Legacy Series)Rear Window (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $14.99
I love Hitchcock movies. This is my favorite Hitchcock movie. All the action takes place in the confines of one apartment comples. Hitchcock still grabs your attention until the very end. Other Hitchcock films I love are Notorious, Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho. If you liked it, check out Vertigo, North by Northwest and Notorious.
Doctor Zhivago (Two-Disc Special Edition)Doctor Zhivago (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $43.98
In my opinion, David Lean made 3 great movies - Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai. Of these, Zhivago is my favorite, although other 2 are excellent. Zhivago is truly epic film that shows how human dreams are destroyed in the course of history. Terrific movie.
Once Upon a Time in the WestOnce Upon a Time in the West
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $2.50
To me, this is what a Spaghetti Western is all about, even more so than the Good, Bad and the Ugly. Claudia Cardinale is unforgettable in this movie, along with Jason Robard and Charles Bronson.
The Last Emperor - Criterion CollectionThe Last Emperor - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $41.99 / Used from: $24.99
Probably the grandest movie I've ever seen. Tremendous scope, fascinating story (and history), wonderful shots and images. Another long movie, but never a dull moment.
Amores Perros (Signature Series)Amores Perros (Signature Series)
Buy used from: $4.99
Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu made 3 great movies - Amores Perros, 21 grams and Babel. Of these 3, Amores Perros is my favorite. If you liked it, check out his other 2 movies. You'll love all three.
GoodFellasGoodFellas
Buy used from: $1.88
It's hard to choose between Martin Scorsese films. Is Goodfellas better than Taxi Driver or Departed or Casino or Raging Bull? I chose Goodfellas because of this trio of stars (Liotta, De Niro and Pesci) and a great storyline.
L'Avventura - Criterion CollectionL'Avventura - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $18.95
Of the modern Italian films, L'Avventura is my top pick. If you're a casual fan like myself, you can learn alot from watching a movie with commentary regarding what the director is trying to achieve with each shot.
Miller's CrossingMiller's Crossing
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.69
I wanted to include Coen brothers' film in this list, but I couldn't choose just one. My top picks are Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Barton Fink and Miller's Crossing. Personally, Miller's Crossing has the edge because of cinematography and music.
