Editorial Reviews

From the Manufacturer
Turn virtually any 2008 Samsung HDTV into a powerful digital home entertainment center – using your PC. Samsung’s MediaLive Digital Media Adaptor uses your home network to deliver the family photos, music playlists, and home movies on your PC to your Samsung HDTV. It’s like combining the connectivity of your PC with the superior viewing capabilities of your TV – the best of both digital worlds. Instead of crowding around a 15-inch PC monitor to share your latest music or movies, your family can transfer the same PC content in real-time and share it on a 50-inch HDTV with a group of friends.

  • Stay entertained with hours of your own personal media right on your HDTV, such as family photos and music playlists
  • Stream digital video from sources like MSN Video and CinemaNow
  • Watch, pause or record your favorite shows and movies – just like using a DVR2
Easy to Connect
Easily connected to an existing wireless or wired Internet connection, Samsung's MediaLive allows PCs running Windows Vista or Windows Vista Home Premium to stream digital content, including HD content, to any 2008-model Samsung HDTV in the home with an HDMI-CEC connection.

Easy to Use Interface

Employing the simple-to-navigate user interface and integrated electronic program guide of Windows Media Center, content browsing and playback is easily controlled using the arrow and enter buttons available on either the included MediaLive Simple Remote, or the Samsung HDTV's remote control.

Access a Range of Online Services -- Movie Downloads, Sports, XM Radio, and more
Beyond streaming personal entertainment, Samsung's MediaLive gives consumers access to a wide range of entertainment options including online services such as Vongo, MovieLink, Showtime TV, XM Radio, and FOX Sports, as well as the ability to browse through top news stories from Reuters and NPR. Additionally, in the U.S., Windows Media Center features the Internet TV beta program, which offers access to viral videos, news stories, movie trailers, sports clips, cast interviews, movie concerts and more. For access to live and recorded TV through the Samsung MediaLive, a simple TV tuner can be connected to the PC, turning it into a powerful DVR with the ability to watch and record favorite television shows and movies. In conjunction with FOX Sports, consumers are able to access SportsLounge to quickly view up-to-date sports scores, statistics and schedules - a perfect tool for any fantasy sports fan.

Mounts Directly to Your Samsung Flat-Panel HDTV
Using the included mounting bracket, the compact device can be easily mounted to the rear of select Samsung flat-panel TVs for a clutter-free home theater setup. Operational commands are sent to the MediaLive via the HDMI-CEC port for a high quality, single-cable connection to the HDTV. The device connects to a PC via a RJ45 connected LAN cable, or wirelessly through a built-in 802.11 a/b/g/n receiver.

Customer Reviews

Only worth it if you have a recent Samsung TV, otherwise get a cheaper extender3
Pros
-Works as advertised
-Wireless 802.11g AND draft 802.11n (the N works great)
-Can be mounted behind your Samsung TV
-Small and attractive design
-Generates little heat
-Your existing Samsung TV remote can control the unit through the HDMI
-Firmware upgradeable over the internet

Cons
-Slow and sluggish menu navigation (compared to Xbox360)
-Slow and sluggish channel changing (compared to Xbox360)
-No number keys on the supplied remote
-The remote uses watch style batteries
-"Out of memory" error, forcing me to reboot the box. (this has happened once so far, hopefully this doesn't happen again)
-Nearly endless power-on time, I'd estimate over a minute. You're better off leaving the thing on all the time
-Only 1080i capable, not 1080p

Like a TiVo without the monthly charges5
I got the MediaLive Adapter yesterday, and connected it to my Samsung HL61A750 DLP TV with no problems. It connects to my PC via wired Ethernet, and the speed is plenty fast, with minimal lag. My objective was to use my PC as a DVR for over-the-air broadcasts (I have 2 USB tuners attached to the PC), and it does so very well. The Adapter integrates seamlessly with the TV. Now all I have to do is get a second hard drive to hold all of the programs I'll be recording.

Works Flawlessly - Even Includes HDMI Cable5
After reading reviews of other Media Extenders, I was a little nervous before I purchased the Samsung MediaLive.. Just purchased two of them, installed it and wow - it works flawlessly! The included remote even turns on and off the TV without any setup. If you're intending on primarily using the Media Live on your tv, you can put your regular remote away!

It even contains an HDMI cable in the box!

Currently I have a Wireless-G network, and I do notice some lag due to the lower bandwidth, so I will be upgrading to Wireless-N shortly, but even with the Wireless-G, the MediaLive adapter works great and is still very usable. Recorded tv streams great, very little (if any) pixelation while watching a streamed tv show (due to the Wireless-G connection). Music & Photos work great, absolutely no problem hearing music.

I couldn't be happier with a product that works so seamlessly and smoothly with my network, computer and tv. Excellent job samsung!

It should be mentioned that I have a 26" & a 42" Series 4 LCD TV. According to the Medialive box & Samsung website the device doesnt work on Series 4 LCD's smaller than 32 inches, I have no problem using it on my 26" Series 4 TV.
