Toliver's SecretToliver's Secret by Esther Wood Brady
Buy new: $6.50 / Used from: $0.35
A young, timid girl has to fight her fears and help the Patriots by delivering a message during the Revolution. Can she do it? Great read-aloud for boys and girls.
HeidiHeidi by Johanna Spyri
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.98
This is a current read-aloud to my first grade girl and we are loving it! I never read this book as a child. It's not like the movie. Don't miss this classic.
Benjamin West and His Cat GrimalkinBenjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin by Marguerite Henry
Buy new: $12.55 / Used from: $9.99
This is a lovely book about Benjamin West, a Quaker painter during the Colonial period. Both boys and girls will enjoy this book.
Dangerous Journey: The Story of Pilgrim's ProgressDangerous Journey: The Story of Pilgrim's Progress by Oliver Hunkin
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $13.00
This book is an adaptation of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. We've read it twice and gleaned more each time. There are some scary pictures, so a sensitive child might not enjoy it, but my daughter loved it. Definitely do this one as a read aloud only, esp. the first time through.
James Herriot's Treasury for Children: Warm and Joyful Tales by the Author of All Creatures Great and SmallJames Herriot's Treasury for Children: Warm and Joyful Tales by the Author of All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $0.11
This book is worth it for the illustrations alone, but the short stories are wonderful as well! This book is beautiful. You and your kids will enjoy it.
Sarah Whitcher's StorySarah Whitcher's Story by Elizabeth Yates
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.04
A wonderful story about a young, three year old girl, who gets lost in the woods of New Hampshire during the early days of the colony. This story has a happy ending. I think boys would enjoy this story as much as girls. It's an easy read-aloud.
Elin s Amerika (rev., 3rd ed.) (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese, Hindi, Tamil, Telug, Kannada, Malayalam, ... Gujarati, Bengali and Korean Edition)Elin s Amerika (rev., 3rd ed.) (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese, Hindi, Tamil, Telug, Kannada, Malayalam, ... Gujarati, Bengali and Korean Edition) by Marguerite de Angeli
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $29.75
This beautiful story is back in print. Buy it while you can. It's a wonderful story about a young Swedish girl named Elin who moves with her family to Delaware and her adventures. It's a great way to introduce the lifestyles of these early Americans.
The Courage of Sarah NobleThe Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.01
A really easy book for reading aloud (maybe a 2nd grade reading level?) about a young girl who goes with her father to build a new home for their family in the woods during the early Colonial days. Her mother's parting words were, "Keep up your courage Sarah Noble" and Sarah has many times to live up to those words in her story. I think boys would enjoy this story as much as girls.
The Child's Story BibleThe Child's Story Bible by Catherine F. Vos
Buy new: $18.15 / Used from: $10.40
I read this Bible aloud to my children at breakfast time. Catherine Vos has such a wonderful way of telling the Bible stories (and she tells them in chronological order, not Bible order). She also looks forward to Christ's coming, mentioning when some event looks forward to his coming. My girls (7 & 5) both love listening to this book.
Viking Adventure, By Clyde Robert Bulla, Illustrated By Douglas GorslineViking Adventure, By Clyde Robert Bulla, Illustrated By Douglas Gorsline
Buy used from: $7.95
I wish this book would come back in print. Especially for boys, this is a GREAT read-aloud (but my first grade daughter loved it too). It's about how the Vikings first discovered North America around the year 1000 AD.
George Washington's BreakfastGeorge Washington's Breakfast by Jean Fritz
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.16
A quick, easy read that is a fun way to learn not only a bit about George Washington, but also how to research the answer to a question you have (like "What did George Washington eat for breakfast?").
The Hundred DressesThe Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $2.28
A wonderful book about a young girl who is torn between being friends with a "popular" girl at school and the fact that that same girl teases another unfortunate girl. She's afraid that by speaking up, her "friend" will turn on her. I think all young girls should read this book, esp. as they get to that age where the merciless teasing begins. (I think this book is better for girls than boys.)
Stone FoxStone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner
Buy new: $5.50 / Used from: $0.01
A short chapter book about a young boy who enters a sled race to try to save his grandfather's farm. The story has a sad, but satisfying, ending. I loved the story. My husband read it aloud to our girls.
Mountain BornMountain Born by Elizabeth Yates
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.85
I have only read this to myself, but I loved it! It's a beautiful book that gives you a wonderful glimpse into a shepherd's life and life on a sheep farm. The main character is a young boy, but I think girls and boys would both enjoy this book.
The Year of Miss Agnes (Aladdin Historical Fiction)The Year of Miss Agnes (Aladdin Historical Fiction) by Kirkpatrick Hill
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
This book gives you a wonderful glimpse into a one-room schoolroom and life in rural Alaska. I wish I had had a teacher like Miss Agnes!
Understood BetsyUnderstood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $0.78
This was probably my personal favorite book this year, but I think I read it too early to my first grader. I think a girl should be about 10 years old when they first read this book, otherwise some of the plot will go right over their head (although there is nothing whatsoever inappropriate in this book for any age). Read it to yourself even if your kids are too young to enjoy it now.
Calico CaptiveCalico Captive by Elizabeth George Speare
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.74
This is another book I enjoyed on my own, but haven't (and won't) read to my child yet. I think early high school is a good age to introduce this book, however as a grown-up, you'll enjoy it now. It's set during the French and Indian War, mostly in Canada.
The Wheel on the SchoolThe Wheel on the School by Meindert Dejong
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.01
We've just started reading this book, but so far we enjoy it.
