The Truth about Sex and AIDS5
This book shows, with copious evidence, that the reduction of the incidence of AIDS will not come about through the sale or distribution of condoms, but through behavior change. That is not welcome news for those who accept the conventional belief that sexual behavior cannot be changed and for those who think that the AIDS crisis should be treated as a medical crisis. It is not a medical crisis. It is a moral crisis---and it requires a moral solution, namely, the decision to exercise sound choices in one's sexual life. Surprisingly, the evidence in support of this view comes primarily from programs that have been successfully implemented in Africa, programs that stress abstinence and fidelity in marriage. I say "surprisingly" because we in the West often assume that we know best, and that other supposedly lesser nations should learn from our wisdom. In this case, we have much to learn from Africa. Evidence from that region shows that when there is a concerted effort to encourage sexual restraint, there follows a significant decline in the spread of this deadly disease. We in the West, as a general rule, deny that this is even possible. Instead, we continue to advance a failed ideology that refuses to place its trust in the ability of human beings to exercise responsible conduct. We seek a medical solution to what is essentially a moral problem.
