Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-In this companion to I Love You, Stinky Face (BridgeWater, 1997), a little boy has some new queries for his mother. Speaking to her by telephone, he wonders when she is coming home and asks a series of questions starting with "...what if the airplane forgets how to fly?" His mother responds to each worry with a Runaway Bunny-like solution, pledging to "...hop in the basket of a hot-air balloon," "...find the speediest shark in the ocean," or "...hitch a ride on...[a] supersonic spaceship..."-all in an effort to get back to her son. Moore's detailed, full-color drawings include such exotic locales as a lush jungle, a medieval castle, and the gangplank of a pirate ship. The amusing illustrations in muted, dreamy shades spill out over the pages, reflecting the free associations of the text. Although the formula is familiar, the message is reassuring and could be used to prepare children for times when a parent is away from home.

From Booklist
With the same playful questions and wildly fantastic answers that worked so well in I Love You, Stinky Face (1997), McCourt and Moore play out a small child's anxiety about whether Mama will make it home. What if the airplane forgets to fly? Then she will jump on a camel. But what if . . . ? From hot-air balloon to pirate ship, from shark to spaceship to dragon, Mama is absolutely certain that she will brave desert, jungle, ocean, and black hole in space and return safely to park in the driveway at home with the child she loves. The palette is similar to the bright purple and green of the first book, and the double-page paintings show the child talking to Mama on the telephone while his books and toys take him on the imaginary journeys everywhere. Kids will welcome the reassurance as they laugh at the wild exaggeration and recognize their fears. Hazel Rochman

Customer Reviews

Thank you Between the Lions for reading this book to us!5
My son and I watched Between the Lions and they read this book today. My son LOVED it, and so did I. My husband often travels for business, me less so, and this is a great book for showing kids we will do anything to get home to them. I'm getting two copies of this book before either of us takes one more trip, and the away parent can read it to my son over the phone before bed!

A Must Have!5
This book is by far the best "feel good" book I have read to my children since, "Guess How Much I Love You" by Anita Jeram.
The fantastic phone dialogue, between this traveling mother and her child, who is at home missing her, shows children that there is NOTHING a mother will not do to be with her children. There is a great geographical variety in this book, from the desert, filled with camels and sand, to a past time and place where magical dragons exsist. In the end the child and mother are reassured that mom will be coming home soon-no matter what. This book is a must for all children, especially those who have traveling mothers.

Pure delight5
It is relatively recent that my nearly 5 year old will be still and interested in reading stories and it's been impossible to predict just what will hold his interest. Well, after initially refusing to read this book, now he reads it nightly to me because he has every single word memorized. We share such sweetness and warmth reading this together.
