Product Description

"The Culprit and the Cure is a clear beacon of simple and understandable truth in a sea of commercially motivated hype," said Troy B. Adams, Ph.D. FAWHP at Arizona State University. "Finally a book that gets to the heart of good health in a light-hearted but scientifically supported way. Every individual with children, employees or patients should read and distribute this book."

Everyone seems to know that exercise and a healthy diet make a difference in preventing chronic diseases, but knowing and doing often don't go together. How can the average person get the information they need to make effective lifestyle changes in diet and exercise? In The Culprit and the Cure, nationally known researcher and author Dr. Steven Aldana of Brigham Young University shows how a healthy lifestyle results in drastic improvements in health risks in as little as 6 weeks, and how to get there.

Once you understand why your current lifestyle is causing poor health and see what is meant by good nutrition and physical activity, you will be more ready to change your behaviors. By learning how to change, you start on the road to better health. Dr. Aldana gleaned research from around the globe covering the areas of diet, disease, lifestyle, and healthy behaviors to provide a practical guide to making the changes science has proven will lead to better health and longer life. In an entertaining, easy to understand, and convincing manner, The Culprit and the Cure presents the evidence, makes recommendations, and provides strategies to help even the least disciplined achieve a better quality of life. Individuals gain an understanding of why good nutrition and physical activity are vital to long-term health and preventing chronic diseases, making it easier to implement the book’s strategies for effective, permanent lifestyle changes.

The Culprit and the Cure truly transforms the lives of readers as they: • Learn how healthy lifestyle choices prevent, arrest and even reverse many chronic diseases and add 10 to 20 years to their life span • Understand how science has solved much of the good health puzzle • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight for life • Begin and maintain a habit of regular exercise and good nutrition • Understand how daily choices directly affect their health

"If you're looking for the path that leads to a long and healthy life, the definitive map is between the covers of this book! Brilliant! " said Dr. David Hunnicutt, president, Wellness Councils of America.

From the Publisher
As Americans struggle to eat healthy foods, be physically active, avoid chronic diseases, and control body weight, this book acts as a lifeline…a beacon of scientific truth and a practical plan for change.

Steven G. Aldana, Ph.D. has cut through the marketing hype, sorted through reams of research, and consolidated mountains of evidence to put together a real-world guide to healthy living. His book The Culprit and the Cure is a practical guide that allows real people - like you and me - to improve the quality and length of their lives. It’s really quite simple: Lifestyle is the culprit behind our nation’s declining health and increasing problems with obesity and chronic diseases. The cure is transforming unhealthy lifestyles into healthy ones, resulting in chronic disease prevention (and even reversal), a longer life and maintaining a healthy weight. There are no quick fixes: if you want lifetime benefits, you need to make permanent lifestyle changes.

In The Culprit and the Cure, you get the "whys and the hows." First, you see the science: why does lifestyle impact the risk of chronic disease, and what are all those research study results really saying? Science has already solved much of the good health puzzle, and here it’s presented in clear, concise terms. Dr. Aldana goes on to explain how to have a healthy diet, what makes up good nutrition, how much physical activity is optimum for good health and how to make effective, permanent lifestyle changes. The Culprit and the Cure empowers you with hands-on tips and achievable guidance for embracing healthy choices. Once you see how this information transforms your life, you will want to share it with those you really care about.

Steven G. Aldana is a professor of lifestyle medicine in the College of Health and Human Performance at Brigham Young University. As a prolific researcher and writer, The Culprit and the Cure is the latest of several books he has written in addition to more than 60 scientific articles. A nationally recognized scientist and teacher, Dr. Aldana has become a leading authority on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Now, with The Culprit and the Cure, that importance is supported with a practical, do-able plan to make lifestyle change a reality.

From the Author
The information presented in these chapters is not my opinion. It is not a collection of health tips I’ve picked up from friends and relatives. This information comes directly from the best researchers and scientists in the world whose findings have been published only after their research has been carefully scrutinized by other nationally and internationally known experts. This information is the most accurate information available to date, and it has the potential to change your life. A good friend sent me a family photo taken at Niagara Falls. The amount of water tumbling over that cliff is awesome. It reminded me of our nation’s current health situation. I imagined thousands of people floating in the river above the falls. Most of them were swept over the falls, where teams of medical professionals treated their injuries and tried to help them recover. Upstream I imagined someone standing on the bank throwing out a lifeline to anyone who wanted to grab hold and be pulled ashore to a warm, dry, safe place.

This book is your lifeline. Grab hold of it, read it carefully, and use it to adopt a healthy lifestyle. If you do, you will likely increase your lifespan, improve the quality of your life, and dramatically improve your health.

Book reviews should be about books5
Unlike the last person who posted a review about The Culprit and The Cure, I have actually read this book. The review by "slim woman" was the first book review I've ever read where the writer actually admitted that she never actually read the book. Strange. She gives the book 1 star based on a photo of the author that appeared in a magazine.

This book is excellent. It is one of the best health books I've ever read. Dr. Aldana presents all of the data, both for and against a healthy diet and regular exercise. He tells it like it really is, no biases or ulterior motives. I've had the privilege of taking a class from professor Aldana. He really does practice what he preaches and it was the best class I took in college.

Reviewer "slim woman" is correct. He is not "slim" and will never have the perfect Hollywood figure. But I do know that based on DEXA measurements (the most accurate method of measuring body fat), Dr. Aldana has 14% body fat. The average for men is 24%. Obese for men is 27%. He also has a mesomorph body type, very thick and muscular. He generally runs 4-5 miles several times a week, and walks with his wife 3 miles every morning. He eats extremely healthy food. No, he is not "slim", nor will he ever be. I've shared this book with my family and friends and I would recommend it to anyone who is wondering what they should do to have a long, healthy life. It has improved my health and the health of my family. It is just a great book.

Best Aggregate Source for Actionable Health Information5
This is the first review I have written for any product on Amazon.com. I feel so strongly about this book it would be a disservice not to comment on it.

I have ordered numerous books on the topic of health and healthy living. None have presented a complete picture. Most books contained fragments, at best, of the completeness of information as presented in this book.

The cover of this book is completely accurate when it alludes to it contents: why our lifestyle and diet are the causes of our poor quality of health, and how we can solve this.

If you have any doubt as to the value of this book, I would encourage you to do a search on Google for the title/publisher of this book. On the website for this book you can find the complete contents of chapter one in PDF (Adobe Reader) format.

If you are in search of a book that dispenses with the politics and misinformation on the topic of health, I highly recommend this text to you. As of this writing, the book is selling for about $16. What a small price to pay for the wealth of knowledge contained between its covers!

The Doctor Agrees5
I am a teaching physician at a medical school. Dr. Aldana's book Culprit and the Cure has done a fantastic job summarizing and clarifying all of the confusing information out there about which foods to eat and what type of physical activity is best to live a long healthy and happy life. Scientifically I fully agree and personally I fully recommend this book to help anyone "get it right" when it comes to taking control of your own health. He takes each area one at a time and makes it simple without "dumbing" it up. I use the principles espoused in the book to keep me and my family healthy.
