Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and the side-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents. Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. I Can Haz Open Cans?
Great product, but a little difficult to learn initially. Bought this can opener to replace the worst can opener ever, and so far its a great improvement. Once one gets used to the new way of opening, its easy.

excellent can opener
I was tired of breaking $5 can openers. This one is so well made for sure it will last for years. It works different than all other openers.

This is a better deal than electric can openers.

Nice gadget
Yes, the product doesn't quite give you a hint that it is done making a 360 around the can, but I haven't experienced it once failing to open a can (if you do, may I suggest you ask for a replacement--Amazon will pay shipping both ways for defective items). I do find that I sometimes have to work the opener a bit, making sure that I have the correct seating (thus the minus one star), but I adore the little pliers on the opener's side. They help one to lift off the lid with ease. I loved it so much that I threw out my old style opener and had to buy another to open my tuna cans, so I can drain the liquids better with a decent lip. Other than that, I never whip the old-styled opener out to use.
