Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
English manufacturer Salter understands that the best cooking requires impeccable standards in precision. A slight measurement difference between two and four ounces of minced jalapeno pepper in a recipe can mean disaster. To avoid such mishaps, Salter created this microtronic scale. With its compact size and simple design, users profit by easy storage whether on a countertop or a drawer.

The scale features a round 5-3/4-inch diameter plate upon which to place ingredients. Its careful construction maintains standards in both appearance and flavor, combating residual stains and flavors from previous use. With a handy conversion switch, ingredients may be measured in either the metric or imperial system, enabling cooks to prepare recipes from overseas without rummaging for a calculator. The scale handles quantities weighing up to 5 pounds, marked by the LCD display in 1/8-ounce increments. For the metric system mode, the scale measures with 2-gram increases with up to 2 kilograms capacity. For measurement with bowls or other containers, users need only place the empty container on the scale and press the power button to set the measurement to zero for isolated ingredient weights. The scale also features an automatic zero setting and shutdown, extending the long life of the replaceable lithium batteries. For the best care, wipe down the scale with a damp cloth or a gentle cleanser. Batteries are included with this scale. Salter offers a ten-year warranty on this product. The scale measures 6-3/4 by 7-1/2 by 1-1/2 inches. --Jessica Reuling

Great little scale!5
I have a mechanical scale but I am constantly re-adjusting it to zero. So I bought this salter and I've found that I really like this little scale. I am constantly cutting down recipes and this scale is perfect for measuring out any dry or wet ingredient. I've never had one problem with this scale and I use it several times a week.

Also the scale is thin and flat and with the handy cover, the scale is protected for easy storage.

Compact and useful5
I originally bought this scale because I was dieting and wanted to be able to weigh out exact portion sizes. Now that I am no longer dieting I find it extremely handy when cooking. Many recipes, especially those in professional cookbooks and bread making books, list ingredient measurements by weight so I find having a scale to be increasingly helpful. Even when a volume measurement is also given I prefer to weigh my ingredients because it is much more accurate. I also find it easier than using measuring cups or spoons because I can simply pour ingredients in until I reach the desired weight rather than having to ensure my measuring cups or spoons are clean and painstakingly measuring everything out.
One thing I worried about when buying this scale was whether it would have all the functions I needed. It looked so compact and simple that I was skeptical of whether it would fulfill my needs as my cooking skills progressed. A year after purchasing this, however, I find that it still works perfectly for me. It is very small, which having a tiny kitchen is appreciated. I don't have a lot of counter space so I enjoy that it easily fits into a kitchen cabinet. I also find that I rarely weigh out more than 5 pounds in ingredients so this weight maximum has been more than sufficient. However, if you find you are doing more bulk cooking that you may want a scale that has a higher weight limit. I also really enjoy the tare function. It is extremely helpful when I am measuring out multiple ingredients by weight into a single bowl. I also found that it had a pretty long battery life. I was able to go for a year using it multiple times per day before I had to change out the batteries, and doing so was quite easy. It is also durable. More than once it has fallen into the sink and after letting it sit out to dry overnight it has emerged just fine.
Overall I have been thrilled with this scale. It makes cooking and baking a breeze and stores conveniently. I highly recommend it.

Sturdy, compact and reliable, but lacks a couple of features4
We have had the chrome version of this scale for several years. We use it frequently and it still works well. It is attractive and doesn't take up much space. And it is easy to clean. The "zero" feature is easy to use. Three minor complaints: The scale defaults to grams, so we always have to switch to ounces before we weigh anything. The buttons are not very sensitive, and it sometimes requires multiple tries before they respond. And as has been said about some of the other scales, if you put a bowl on the scale, it is difficult to read the display. My sister-in-law asked for a food scale for Christmas. She likes ours, but we decided to get her the OXO instead; it appears that scale, while not as attractive, is designed to overcome the minor problems we've experienced with our Salter. Just wish that the OXO had a more appealing look to it.
