Amazon.com Review
Purchasing a Wüsthof block set is the most economical way to stock your kitchen with premier cutlery. This set includes: an 8-inch cook’s knife--a staple for chopping meats and vegetables; an 8-inch bread knife with a serrated edge for slicing through crusty breads; a 4-1/2-inch utility knife for smaller foods, such as garlic or strawberries; and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife for peeling fruit. The 9-inch honing steel has a magnetic steel shaft in a fine to medium grit that sharpens without damaging knife edges. A 9-slot oak block stores the cutlery in this set, while leaving room for additional pieces.
Wüsthof’s Grand Prix knives have the perfect balance of high-carbon, no-stain steel. Knives retain their edge longer, and never become discolored. Blades are ground and polished by computer, ensuring perfect tapering from bolster to tip. Edges are hand-honed for precision slicing. The tang extends through a slip-free, molded, polypropylene handle for excellent balance and heft. The knives are dishwasher-safe--though hand washing is recommended. All Wüsthof cutlery is covered under a lifetime warranty. --Cristina VaamondeWhat’s in the Box

Amazon.com Product Description
This seven-piece cutlery collection from the Wüsthof Grand Prix line outfits your kitchen with everything you need to slice, dice, and chop all your favorite foods. The set includes a 3-1/2-inch paring knife for peeling fruits and vegetables, a 4-1/2-inch utility knife for slicing mushrooms, an 8-inch cook's knife for chopping or slicing almost everything, and an 8-inch bread knife for cutting sourdough loaves. To complete the set, Wüsthof throws in kitchen shears, a 9-inch sharpening steel, and a nine-slot wooden storage block. Each knife features a precision-forged high-carbon stainless-steel blade with a full bolster and tang. The forging process gives the blades remarkable sharpness and durability, as does the computer-controlled grinding and polishing process. When the blades eventually dull, as all blades do, the sharpening steel will re-hone the edges with a few quick swipes.
The handles are comfortable in the hands thanks to the slip-free, pebble-grained grip. Each handle also enhances the balance of the knife thanks to the full tang and single-piece construction, making them easier to manipulate and control. Wüsthof recommends hand washing the cutlery--which comes with a limited lifetime warranty--for best results.

Did NOT come with 8" carving knife
I just received this item and it did NOT come with the 8" carving knife. It had shears/scissors instead of the 8" carving knife. Not sure if I want to keep it or not.
The Best
I researched kitchen knives quite a bit before I decided on buying Wusthof. The Classic Black and Grand Prix lines are the highest rated in general over the majority of editorial reviews, and are the most common choice of chefs. Not having a lot of money, I was planning on waiting and saving up for a while before I bought a knife set, but when Wusthof discontinued their Grand Prix line in favor of Grand Prix II, I jumped on the clearance prices. These are amazing deals on fabulous knives.
I agree, it was disappointing not to get the carving knife with the set, but I bought it with the cutting board set. I paid $215 for a cutlery set that would probably retail around $600. These knives should last the rest of your life if you take proper care of them. Do your knives a favor and have them professionally sharpened at least once a year.
Personally, I have been extremely pleased with these knives. They are extremely sharp, and hold their edge very well. Nicely balanced and attractive. There is such a difference between good and bad steel.
Great knives
I love these knives. I replaced a 20 year old set that still had good blades, but the wooden handles were in bad shape. I found the two Consumer Reports reviews (I have had a subscription for many years back to Dec 1998 and Dec 2002). Wusthof Grand Prix were the best in their tests both times. They are best in my tests here in my kitchen. Beautiful balance, the handles have a textured surface so they won't slip out of your hand when wet. They are so sharp. I put wax paper on my cutting boards before slicing and the paper is in shreds everytime after chopping or slicing. I am very happy with these knives and try to think up new meals that require their use. I use them on a daily basis. I also purchased the 8 inch carver and the steak knive set to fill up my block. I keep the two extra steak knives in their case. I love the bread knive. Now, I buy my bread unsliced and it makes perfect slices to any thickness. My shears were from Germany, but my 4.5 inch utility knive was a steak knive instead. So, I have 3 utility or steak knives in the block. My guests help me chop just to use the knives. I have never had so much help in the kitchen before.
