A Neutral Corner: Boxing EssaysA Neutral Corner: Boxing Essays by A. J. Liebling
Buy new: $18.00 / Used from: $3.00
A by-product of the "Golden Age of Sportswriting", A.J. Liebling was a columnist for the New York daily, and one of the greatest writers of all-time. This compilation of his greatest boxing stories illustrate his immense talent, his passion for the sweet science, and some of the most amazing prose I have ever read.
Muhammad AliMuhammad Ali
Buy used from: $8.49
This is the definitive Ali biography. I believed I had read all that had been written about Ali, but this was, far and away the best on the subject. Told by men and women who knew Ali, this is a balanced, fair, and inspiring portrait of the man, foibles, warts and all.
A Flame of Pure Fire: Jack Dempsey and the Roaring '20sA Flame of Pure Fire: Jack Dempsey and the Roaring '20s by Roger Kahn
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $1.22
A great biography of a legend of the roaring twenties. Dempsey was a larger than life figure inside the ropes, and one of the fiercest champions of all-time. Outside the ropes, he was a decent, humble man. His story is a fascinating tale of self-creation. A great read!
CINDERELLA MANCINDERELLA MAN by JEREMY SCHAAP
Buy used from: $0.98
The real life story of the original Rocky Balboa, James Braddock, whose rise from Depression era longshoreman struggling to feed his family to heavyweight champion of the world inspired a generation of fight fans. Bolstered by the support of the only person who believed in him, his manager, his improbable rise was a remarkable story.
Primo: The Story of 'Man Mountain' CarneraPrimo: The Story of 'Man Mountain' Carnera by Frederic Mullally
Buy used from: $32.30
This is a boxing morality tale, with Primo Carnera playing the innocent dupe. Manipulated through the boxing rankings by the American underworld without truly understanding what is happening to him, the giant Italian becomes heavyweight champion, while never really having talent.
Tunney: Boxing's Brainiest Champ and His Upset of the Great Jack DempseyTunney: Boxing's Brainiest Champ and His Upset of the Great Jack Dempsey by Jack Cavanaugh
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $8.04
An underrated and under appreciated sports icon, Tunney pulled off an amazing feat when he lifted Jack Dempsey's title to reach the zenith of the sportsworld. Tunney was never really embraced by the sports public, and never really understood. But he lived an incredible life, and was a thinking man's fighter.
The Sweet ScienceThe Sweet Science by A.J. Liebling
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $7.49
Leibling was the E F Hutton of boxing writing. When he writes, people read. Liebling was clearly in love with boxing, and here, in short stories, he caresses the fighters, the fights and the settings as if they were the most romantic woman on the planet. There was no one better to tell the tales of boxing, ever.
Ghosts of Manila: The Fateful Blood Feud Between Muhammad Ali and Joe FrazierGhosts of Manila: The Fateful Blood Feud Between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier by Mark Kram
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $1.62
A well written chronicle of the legendary fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and how it at once defined the two of them and ultimately destroyed them at the same time. Arguably the best fight of all-time, this books takes us into both lives to explain what the fight meant to the fans and the contestants.
By George: The Autobiography of George ForemanBy George: The Autobiography of George Foreman by George Foreman
Buy used from: $0.92
Some day, there will be a better biography written about George Foreman. Until then, here is the chronicle of perhaps the most amazing sports story of all-time. Brooding, surly athlete remakes himself into popular middle age icon and recaptures the linear heavyweight championship 22 years after doing it the first time.
Dick Tiger: The Life & Times of a Boxing ImmortalDick Tiger: The Life & Times of a Boxing Immortal by Adeyinka Makinde

A moving and passionate recounting of the life of the noble and fierce middle and light heavyweight champion from Nigeria, Dick Tiger. A thoughtful, principled man, Tiger went back to fight for his native land, while still a title holder. A great champion, a great man, a sad and inspiring story.
Battling Siki: A Tale of Ring Fixes, Race, and Murder in the 1920sBattling Siki: A Tale of Ring Fixes, Race, and Murder in the 1920s by Peter Benson
Buy new: $22.76 / Used from: $16.37
A well-told tale of the first African World Champion, from a time when being a Champion really meant something. From the 1920's comes a story of a man with a Champion's heart who comes to America and confronts prejudices, ring fixes, and ultimately, his own murder.
Gentleman Jim Corbett: The Truth Behind a Boxing LegendGentleman Jim Corbett: The Truth Behind a Boxing Legend by Patrick Myler
Buy used from: $64.60
A very good chronicle of the life and times of the second linear Heavyweight Champion. Corbett rarely gets the credit due him for changing the way boxing was fought under the Marquis of Queensbury rules. Takes us to the end of his life, and does a great job illustrating the racial prejudice that was commonplace at the time.
Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack JohnsonUnforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson by Geoffrey C. Ward
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $6.21
To judge this book by its title would be a mistake. Jack Johnson was not constrained or defined by the prejudice of his times. Jack Johnson was an intelligent, cultured trailblazer who soared to the heights of the sportsworld, but suffered crushing personal losses in his life. This is a worthy biography of a cultural icon far ahead of his time.
Writers' Fighters and Other Sweet ScientistsWriters' Fighters and Other Sweet Scientists by John Schulian
Buy used from: $4.79
An obscure offering of columns by former Chicago Sun-Times beat writer John Schulian. He chronicles the final pugilistic days of Muhammad Ali, the mercurial career of Leon Spinks, and my personal favorite chapter on the pathos of the journeyman fighter sitting on the bottom of boxing's food chain. A highly entertaining read!
Sugar RaySugar Ray by Sugar Ray Robinson
Buy new: $15.25 / Used from: $7.22
Typically I prefer a biography to an autobiography, but here Sugar Ray Robinson shows the reader his greatness as well as his sadness and ugliness. Robinson fought well over 200 fights, winning the lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight titles in the days when there were only eight weight classifications, and only one Champion for each. Arguably the greatest fighter of all-time.
The Pussycat of Prizefighting: Tiger Flowers and the Politics of Black CelebrityThe Pussycat of Prizefighting: Tiger Flowers and the Politics of Black Celebrity by Andrew M. Kaye
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $5.00
The story of Tiger Flowers, the first African-American middleweight champion. A proud, simple God-fearing man with tremendous speed, talent and heart, who fought through the prejudices of the times, and the loaded politics of boxings' class system. A quick and highly interesting book.
Archie Moore: The Ole Mongoose : The Authorized Biography of Archie Moore, Undefeated Light Heavyweight Champion of the WorldArchie Moore: The Ole Mongoose : The Authorized Biography of Archie Moore, Undefeated Light Heavyweight Champion of the World by Marilyn G. Douroux
Buy used from: $18.47
Archie Moore was one of boxing's great practicioners. Denied a crack at he World's Light Heavyweight championship for almost twelve years because of politics, he finally gained the title when he was thirty seven years old. He fought to almost fifty, and won more than 200 fights. This is his story. Any true fight fan is better for knowing it.
The Last Great Fight: The Extraordinary Tale of Two Men and How One Fight Changed Their Lives Forever (St Martins Press)The Last Great Fight: The Extraordinary Tale of Two Men and How One Fight Changed Their Lives Forever (St Martins Press) by Joe Layden
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $5.45
We are now closing in on almost 20 years since Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson in the biggest upset perhaps in all sports. I still get goosebumps every time I watch it. An excellent read on what happened, and a keen insight into the minds of the contestants.
The Cold Six Thousand: A NovelThe Cold Six Thousand: A Novel by James Ellroy
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.18
In a sport with a history of "bad boys", Sonny Liston may have been the baddest. This book is anomaly on this list because it is a novel, and it is not about boxing. But it places Liston on the periphery of the Las Vegas underworld, the CIA and both Kennedy assasinations, among other things. The sequel to "American Tabloid".
Victory Over MyselfVictory Over Myself by Floyd Patterson
Buy used from: $18.50
Floyd Patterson was the Heavyweight successor to Rocky Marciano as Champion. He came of age in a crossover time both for America racially, and in boxing. He was a fascinating figure because of the angst he carried both in and out of the ring. He was one of the most skilled fighters of his time. Unfortunately written in 1963, he fought on for ten more years.
Bummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc.: The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Mafia and an Ill-Fated PrizefighterBummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc.: The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Mafia and an Ill-Fated Prizefighter by Ron Ross
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $8.00
Bummy Davis was a welterweight fringe contender in the 1920's and early 30's fighting out of Brooklyn. He was a square guy, fighting off the mob influence in boxing. Once you get past the author's shticky yiddish descriptions and asides, this is an excellent look at boxing's seamier side during what many would consider it's golden age.
Rocky MarcianoRocky Marciano by Everett M. Skehan
Buy used from: $33.99
The only champion to retire with an unblemished record, and boxings true "white hope", Marciano had the intangibles in the ring that make for a great fighter, indomitable will, hard punch, and great work ethic. Out of the ring, he had personality quirks which would qualify him as eccentric, or worse. A fascinating subject.
Earnie Shavers: Welcome to the Big TimeEarnie Shavers: Welcome to the Big Time by Earnie Shavers
Buy used from: $44.45
Earnie Shavers was one of the hardest punchers the heavyweight division ever produced. He scored near misses in title fights versus Muhammud Ali and Larry Holmes, almost knocking Ali down and almost putting Holmes out. Shavers is upbeat, likable and ebullient. A worthwhile read for the boxing fan.
Smokin' Joe: The Autobiography of a Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin' Joe FrazierSmokin' Joe: The Autobiography of a Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin' Joe Frazier by Joe Frazier
Buy used from: $1.44
Joe Frazier was a near-great Heavyweight who is defined by his trilogy with Muhammad Ali, and his two knockouts at the hands of George Foreman. He has plenty to say here, and once the reader ets past the bitterness, it is a likable and interesting portrait of a household name of the 1960's and 70's.
Larry Holmes: Against the OddsLarry Holmes: Against the Odds by Larry Holmes
Buy used from: $15.52
Larry Holmes was one of the most technically capable Heavyweights the division has ever seen. Blessed with a strong chin and huge heart, Holmes ruled the division for seven years. Although phlegmatic outside the ropes, his is a readable story. He pulls some punches, though, and doesn't tell of his relationship with Don King, or his feelings about fighting Ali.
In the Ring With Bob FitzsimmonsIn the Ring With Bob Fitzsimmons by Adam, J. Pollack
Buy new: $34.95 / Used from: $46.69
Bob Fitzsimmons has been relegated to near obscurity in boxing lore, but he was boxing's first triple champion in the days when having a title was deeply meaningful. This is less a biography than a ring record of "Ruby Robert", but it is a thoroughly researched record of his fights leading up to his title shot with James Corbett.
SUGAR RAY LEONARD AND OTHER NOBLE WARRIORSSUGAR RAY LEONARD AND OTHER NOBLE WARRIORS by Sam Toperoff
Buy used from: $8.00
The definitive Sugar Ray Leonard biography has yet to be written. Until that happens, we must settle for books like this to tell the tale of the most charismatic fighter of his generation. He had the unbelievable combination of speed, balance, ring generalship and indominable spirit that has not been seen since.
Champion Joe Louis: Black Hero in AmericaChampion Joe Louis: Black Hero in America by Joe) Mead, Chris Louis
Buy used from: $12.00
Joe Louis was arguably the finest fighting machine in heavyweight history. His story is equal parts glory, tragedy and cautionary tale. He was the first black sports hero to the American (white) public, except for Jesse Owens. He walked the color line carefully, and fought with controlled fury. This is highly readable account of his life and times.
Only the Ring Was SquareOnly the Ring Was Square by Teddy Brenner
Buy used from: $4.76
Teddy Brenner was the matchmaker for Madison Square Garden for over thirty years. He tells his story with pride about what constitutes a good match-up of fighters, about dealing with sneaky managers and corrupt promoters. This is a great book to learn about what happens before the fighters square off. A quick, enjoyable and insightful read.
Barney Ross (Jewish Encounters)Barney Ross (Jewish Encounters) by Douglas Century
Buy new: $15.56 / Used from: $1.56
In the 1920's and 30's, there were many Jews occupying places in the boxing hierarchy, from journeyman, to contender to Champion. Many were hungry, shrewd, and intelligent. Some were connected through the mobsters that controlled the promotions and betting. Barney Ross was agreat champion. Once out of the ring, he dealt with issues that would have felled lesser men.
Charley Burley, The Life & Hard Times of an Uncrowned ChampionCharley Burley, The Life & Hard Times of an Uncrowned Champion by Allen, S. Rosenfeld
Buy new: $36.49 / Used from: $37.98
Charley Burley was one of the greatest fighters never to win a title. Deespite beating fighters sush as Fritzie Zivic, Archie Moore and Billy Soose, Burley never got a title shot. This book is an intimate look at he man and the fighter, but also takes the reader to a different time, and a rollicking Pittsburgh of the 1930's and 40's.
"THE UNCROWNED CHAMPION" IS JOEY GIAMBRA"THE UNCROWNED CHAMPION" IS JOEY GIAMBRA by Joey GIAMBRA/FRED VILLANI
Buy used from: $22.00
This is a worthwhile pugilistic tale of a fine 1950's fighter who worked his way up the tough ranking ladder only to be derailed not in the ring, but via injury. Giambra speaks his heart about his aspirations and his disappointments.
Black AjaxBlack Ajax by George MacDonald Fraser
Buy new: $13.45 / Used from: $0.25
For the boxing historian, this is a great account of early bare knuckle fighting. Fraser is very comfortable writing about this era, as he authored the "Flashman" novels. This is of Tom Molineaux, who was a freed slave in New Orleans in the mid 19th century. Well told!
