Useful in its place
I had owned one of these many years ago, and had ended up throwing it away in frustration. My husband requested one after seeing it in action, and so I got him one.
If you measure a lot of honey, syrups, and nut butters, it really does make things easier. I wouldn't bother for oils or liquids, because the plunger is very tight and hard to manage. That's a good thing, when it's keeping your honey in the cup and then putting all of it into your recipe. It's a real pain when trying to set it for the correct quantity and when trying to open it to clean it.
Alton Brown plunger cup
Mom had one when I was a kid. Thought it was kinda silly - until I started doing some serious cooking and realized what a pain it is trying to get all the liquid/sticky/soft stuff out of regular measuring cups. Finally I saw Alton Brown using them and did a search of the internet, and Amazon's suite of stores had the best prices. Got both the 1 cup & 2 cup models. And my wife loves it too.
I Like It
I see that others haven't given this a good rating and I read those reviews before purchasing but decided to try it anyway. I like it.
It is hard to push but I guess it would have to be, in order to prevent it from leaking. In order to pull the plunger back (in order to use it) you have to push the plunger part with your thumb (right where it says "Push Here") rather than trying to pull the plunger out of the unit backward. After filling the cup with whatever liquid you're measuring, the plunger needs a firm push in order to empty it. I don't have any trouble accomplishing this but arthritic fingers would probably.
I wash my measuring cups and spoons by hand anyway, so that doesn't bother me. The one I got is white, rather than yellow, as pictured, but that's okay. I don't see any sign of the print wearing off yet but have only used it 10 times or so.
I much prefer this for measuring sour cream, molasses, honey, etc., than a regular measuring cup.
