About the Brand
Ruth's Hemp Foods works with family farms and gives back to the community. Their products are always GMO-free, with no hydrogenated fats, no transfatty acids, no refined sugars, no artificial preservatives, no sulfites, and no fillers.

About Ruth
Yes, there is really a Ruth. "I get this question a lot, and am always amused," she says.

"I have been eating health food most of my life. I used to work in the software industry, but wanted to do something personally meaningful," she says. "In 1990 I started an environmental mail order, and it eventually included hemp clothing. I joined the lobby to legalize hemp in Canada, and still do lots of work in the industry, including serving on two industry boards at the moment. I am also on the Board of Everdale, an organic farm and learning center outside of Toronto, which happens to be my "alma mater."

"When I learned about the nutritional powers of the amazing hemp seed, that was it for me. I started producing hemp food. I am in love with food, with health, with life, and want to share this," she says. "I am not in love with genetic modification, hydrogenated fats, refined sugars and other garbage. You won't find these in my products."

What are the Benefits of Eating Hemp Products?
The inside of the hemp seed, also known as the hempnut, is rich in both protein and oil. And the oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids (EFAs). You may choose to eat the entire seed, or only the hempnut, or to press the oil out of the seed and use the oil and the meal (the rest) separately.

Hemp is a great source of protein. It has almost as much protein as whole (or fermented) soybeans. That means more than virtually any other protein source, including fish, beef, eggs, chicken, or tofu.

Protein consists of amino acids. Of the 20, eight are considered essential--that is, your body cannot make them itself, but MUST get them from food. And although hemp doesn't have quite as much protein as whole soy, the percentage of Essential Amino Acids is higher in hemp than soy. Go for quality--not quantity! As well, hemp is not genetically modified, unlike most soy.

Most hemp oil is equally remarkable. Most hemp oil contains about 56% Omega 6 or Linoleic Acid (LA), 20% Omega 3 or Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA): almost a 3:1 ratio of Omega 6:3. As well, hemp oil contains about 3% gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a rare fatty acid found primarily in evening primrose and borage.

Ruth's Certified Organic Hemp Oil contains a 2:1 ratio of Omega 6:3, i.e., less Omega 6, more Omega 3 (as well as the GLA). This is wonderful, considering that North American diets have an overabundance of Omega 6, but need more Omega 3. Hemp oil is the only food oil that contains Omega 6, 3, and GLA.

Customer Reviews

Great!5
Being allergic to dairy, gluten and not wanting to eat soy due to the health problems associated with heavy soy consumption, I looked into hemp protein as a source of easily digestible protein to help bulk up when working out.

Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised and have ordered 4 more canisters of ruth's hemp protein powder(2 just hemp, 2 with sprouted flax) and will order more of the Maca when I run out as this one contains Maca and it's advisable to only take 5g of Maca per day(1 serving of this has 5g) since it's just an effective energy booster.

The taste isn't bad at all. I mix a scoop of the powder with some unsweetened almond milk, just a bit of fruit and some chia seeds and it tastes good. It does have a bit of an earthy taste, a kick of sorts but it doesn't bother me at all and I'm glad that you don't have to add tons of sugary fruit to cover up the taste.

As far as how it works, the powder is a great meal replacement or another meal if you're trying to gain weight. The powder itself provides 11g of Protein(with the sprouted flax one providing 13g and the standalone hemp powder one providing 15g) and they all have about 120-140 calories so adding 2 scoops, some milk and some fruit and even some nuts is a good calorie boost. It also provides a lot of energy due to the protein being easily assimilated and the maca being an excellent energy booster on its own.

Nutritionally, this thing is a champ with a great Omega 6:Omega 3 ratio(3:1 which is the optimal healthy range) as well as being a great source of dietary fiber to keep the intestinal tract healthy and having many vitamins and minerals(being an excellent source of Zinc and Vitamin E, 2 minerals which can be hard to get in our daily diets). Overall, this a great product that I recommend wholeheartedly and will continue to use for a while.

An Amazing Protein & Energy Source (If you dig the taste)5
I am a huge fan of Ruth's Hemp Protein Powders, in this blend with Flax and Maca you get a ton of great nutrients and the boost of Maca (which is a good energy source). I use this with 10oz of almond milk, 5-6 frozen strawberries and a 1/2 frozen banana (Blended up in my Vitamix). The only thing about this powder is that it does have a distinct taste, I like it but some may not. If you do find you like the taste, you'll be hard pressed to find a better protein powder on the market!

The maca doesn't seem to agree with me.3
I've used plain hemp protein powders and really liked them, but this one makes me feel vaguely ill sometimes after I drink it. Since I use the plain with no problems and frequently add flax that I grind myself, I assume it's the maca that doesn't agree with me. I don't care for the taste much either.
