great translation of God's word5
I believe that the ESV is one of the best translations that we have right now. It is easy to read and follow and staying true to what the original language says. As for other reviewers stating that it is not progressive enough is a very interesting statement. To claim that the word of God has to change to this world is a very deceived way of thinking. God's word never changes and more importantly God never changes. As for the comment about ESV commentators for the study bible; claiming that they are homophobic, I will say this. NRSV is not truly translating certain passages right, giving the allusion that homosexuality isn't it even stated. For example 1 Corinthians 6:9 in NRSV lists acts of sexual immorality and it has male prostitutes as one. In the greek language the word used here meant men who act in homosexuality which many non-progressive bibles translate as. So it makes you wonder, which version is staying true to God's word and also makes you wonder how many other verses NRSV is translating in a more politically correct way. In this day and age if you are a true believer in Christ and you truly want to learn His word, stick with the bibles that are translated from the original languages. Try to stay away from interpertations.
I have read from ESV now for awhile and I'm awaiting the new study bible and I'm very excited for it. I do not have any particular reviews for this edition (color, size, notes) quite yet, but I felt that I needed to address certain statements that were made against it. Hope this review helps enlighten and bring discernment to any book or interpertation that would make you think that the Word of God needs to change for the 21st century.
Thanks and have a blessed day. In Jesus' name.

Great Bible!! Extremely Poor Quality Control3
I would just like to say I love the layout and design of this bible. The articles and notes are well written. Even as thick as this bible is, it still amazes me how much information the publishers were able to fit into it. It is like having a complete commentary in addition to a bible. The full color illustrations are wonderful and very insightful and really allow you to understand what you are reading about. The bible has a calvanistic tone to it, which I find most agreeable.

Now for the bad news. CHECK THIS BIBLE AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT!!! Thumb through all the pages. My original bible had a section of about 80 pages where the printing was blurred very bad. Some pages were so bad you could hardly read the text. I would not have discovered it, but thanfully my pastor had us turn to a passage in that section and I noticed the defect. Otherwise, I probably would have missed the return window to send the bible back. I have since received two replacement copies, and both are flawed in the same way, but in different sections. The last replacement I received has the blurred pages in Psalms, but it is limited to about 12-15 pages. It almost looks like the pages moved during printing. Also, there is some wrinkling of the pages near the binding, almost as if the binding was pulled too tight during that process, causing the pages to wrinkle somewhat. That is a minor flaw I could live with, but the blurred pages are extremely difficult to read.

Amazon has currently pulled this item as they are going to check their stock. When they make it available again, I intend to order another replacement, as the bible itself is great! Amazon has been very understanding and has really bent over backwards to work on getting the issue resolved.

If not for the quality control, I would rate this bible 6 stars!! I forsee it remaining as my main bible for a long time to come.

Best ESV for serious, note taking Bible students4
I had been using the 1977 wide margin NASB from Thomas Nelson for 28 years. I hated to move away from it but it was starting to fall apart. Our church was planning on moving to the ESV and, after much investigation, I decided to move to the ESV rather than go to another NASB (which had been updated about 15+ years ago and the older versions were difficult to find).

The main points I was interested in:
- Font Size for readability; This one has 10 point type - the largest from Crossway except for the Large Print edition (to my knowledge).
- Sewn binding for durability - absolutely critical if you want your Bible to last a long time. The trutone, brown-cordovan portfolio version has a sewn binding as does the calfskin version and the ESV Study Bible.
- Wide margins and `white space' for notes - extremely important for me; This version has 1" margins and lots of white space in and around the text - especially in the Old Testament.
- Good Cross-references; Unfortunately this version does not appear to have as many as my old NASB
- Good paper quality for note taking; This specific reference version (trutone, brown-cordovan Portfolio) has thicker paper (24 #; The others have 21# I'm told.) I'm not an expert on paper, but it doesn't 'feel' as durable as my old NASB.

I like most everything except I wish they would have published one with a genuine leather cover (thus, the reason I gave it 4 stars). Also would have liked a slightly wider margin. But all in all, this is definitely the best ESV Bible for serious Bible students (The ESV Study Bible is exceptional but it has it's own set of issues for someone my age - mainly font size and physical mass!).

Finally, it is an exceptionally accurate translation with good readability - and I would highly recommend the ESV translation to anyone.
