Johannes Cabal the NecromancerJohannes Cabal the Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $9.83
Good story with the creepy carnival feel about a man trying to make a deal with Satan to get his soul back.
Infected: A NovelInfected: A Novel by Scott Sigler
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $3.06
One of those science-fiction / horror books that has the ability to make you cringe in certain parts. Basically, people are infected by spores that make them go insane, but why? Not really for the squeamish.
Breathers: A Zombie's LamentBreathers: A Zombie's Lament by S. G. Browne
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $4.98
A zombie story from the other point of view - the zombie's. This is really able to put things in perspective if zombies didn't go murder-crazy when they turned and instead kept their intelligence.
House of LeavesHouse of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.00
This one is kind of different. It's written as a review / essay over a movie that may or may not exist [imagine someone writing an essay describing Paranormal Activity, and you get the idea. It's very good at trying to explain a couple's new home that grows and shifts on the inside, with new doors and a labyrinth growing out of nowhere.
The Strain: Book One of The Strain TrilogyThe Strain: Book One of The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro
Buy new: $17.81 / Used from: $11.99
This is a good ol' vampire book [none of that Twilight crap]. Begins with a myth from rural Europe, and then shifts to a vampire uprising in New York. This is the first of three books, so this should be a very good series.
The Terror: A NovelThe Terror: A Novel by Dan Simmons
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I don't normally like historical fiction, but this one got me hooked. It takes an actual mission to find a route to the Northwest Passage in the Arctic and throws in something that you don't see coming. Has some mythology in it, and you definitely feel for the good guys.
City of Thieves: A NovelCity of Thieves: A Novel by David Benioff
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.96
Story of 2 men in World War II that are sent on a ridiculous mission: find a dozen eggs in bombed-out Russia for the general's daughter's wedding cake. Shows the good and bad in people in war, and had me glued to it.
