Love in the Time of Cholera (Vintage International)Love in the Time of Cholera (Vintage International) by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.85
Amazing. I couldn't wait to sit down and read this book every night. The language (the translator deserves some credit here, I suppose) is beautiful and flows, the insights are painfully true, and the story--while not thrilling--is interesting. Try it!
Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Penguin Classics)Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Penguin Classics) by Thomas Hardy
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $0.65
I was amazed at how feminist this book is--the main point of the book is that despite the fact that she is a 'fallen' woman, Tess is more steadfast and honorable than most of those around her. Hardy does an interesting job of tying weather and place to plot and characters.
Emma (Penguin Classics)Emma (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.61
Oh, Emma...always struck me as so girly. And there were parts of this book, upon re-reading as an adult, that I did still find annoying. But the characters are so well done. When annoying, the are annoying because they are so well depicted. And they are timeless, too.
PlatformPlatform by Michel Houellebecq
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $3.22
I've never really felt the urge to read French fiction. I guess I had nightmares that it would be overly philosophical. Reading this book is like hanging out with some of my friends-- intelligent, cynical, sometimes brilliantly entertaining, sometimes getting under my skin.
A Wild Sheep Chase: A NovelA Wild Sheep Chase: A Novel by Haruki Murakami
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.99
Murakami is fantastic-- insightful characters, insanely creative plots, a little magic that is crafted in a believable manner, a depth to the writing that enhances it--but you can also enjoy the book without thinking too much about it. Wonderfully translated as well.
The Mill on the Floss (Penguin Classics)The Mill on the Floss (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $3.89
Another book that impressed me with modern ideas regarding women's education and place in society. The Tolliver family sacrifices to educate their son but doesn't see the value of educating their brilliant daughter. The writing about blossoming relationships is impressive.
Marjorie MorningstarMarjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $0.81
I've carried this book around forever; my mother has been trying to get me to read it since high school. What a wonderful story of growing up...Marjorie might not be the best character in literature, but she is certainly one many women could relate to. How is one ever to be sure about love?
Interpreter of MaladiesInterpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
Buy new: $15.60 / Used from: $14.27
Short stories, usually not my thing. But the writing, the intensity of the characters, the unique but true situations...these were wonderful. I can't imagine anyone could read these stories without recognizing at least one person from their own lives.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)The Picture of Dorian Gray (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
Alright, you sort of have to read this book just to get all those references in popular culture to the picture of Dorian Gray. I would laugh out loud at some of his phrases, even while shivering with horror at how evil Dorian Gray is. This is a quick, dark but funny read.
