A sort of "Shabby" version, lots of mud, loose hair, and "savage society."

Another Austen classic brought to life, with all the usual commentary on poverty, being female and marraige. This movie is well done.

This BBC edition has wonderful actors, which thankfully lack the wooden, rehearsed stage presence found in many early BBC productions. Some find this version a bit "steamy" for their taste, as it has some suggestive scenes. But if Bronte could have written it, she would have. They are consistent with the story.

Fantastic old movies with great performances by Robert York and Raquel Welch. Funny too.

This film is not available in the US on DVD. If you can somehow secure a copy it is a cute film about knowing your place and thumbing your nose at it.

This bitter sweet tale is heartbreaking in it's sense of waste. It speaks to blood being thicker than water, young love and dissappointed hopes. "Tristain was the rock they broke themselves on."

The usual Robert Redford sort of thing...there and not there. But still a fantastic tale of a strong woman finding meaning in a life that does not, as so often happens, turn out exactly as she would like.

This movie is subtle, in that you have to get in the characters heads and imagine the depth of the "love" they feel for each other. Never overtly expressed, all is kept under wraps.

This movie is touching and sweet. About finding love, understanding and devotion.

I'm not a big Kirsten Dunst fan, but she lends a kind of "cream puff" air headed quality to Marie that sort of grows on you.

Love denied and duty. A movie no less about food than about the complexity of relationships undertaken for the wrong reasons. Kind of like "Love in a Time of Cholera".

This is a great new adaptation by BBC that I really enjoyed for its smart acting and beautiful location by the sea. The addition of Miss Austen Regrets is a find as well. Based on Jane Austen's personal correspondence with her sister, it's more factual than Becoming Jane.

Rich and dark like the best chocolate! Natalie Portman could be better as the scheming Ann, but Scarlett is fantastic as Mary. She is the glue that holds her family together as it is torn apart by greed and ambition, the only character you can really feel for without thinking they deserved what they got. All in all, a good movie about family, duty and honor (or lack there of).

The dancing scene at the beginning of this movie with Cate Blanchette and Joseph Fiennes is one of the most touching on film. A queen made "Virginal" by a broken heart.

As Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses, I have to include this twisted account of the Marquis De Sade in my list. Erotic and not for the faint at heart, Michael Caine is perfect.

I remember this movie for how beautifully it is filmed. Lavish costuming and set design make it a feast for the eyes. Set in a prosperous pre war Japan, we are afforded a glimpse into a secret society of the "oldest profession."

A book that was banned for a century after it was written, earns its reputation as a witty, if baudy movie. One of the bright moments in British Literature and film, a must for any Angliophille. Thankfully, your husband's permission is not required to purchase it, as it was back then!

Not to be confused with the television series of the same name, North and South is instead a detailed study of the British class system by Elizabeth Gaskell. Considered by many to be her master work, North and South chronicles the developing love affair between a cotton manufacturer from the industrial North and a vicar's daughter from the more cosmopolitain South.
