The definitive period piece, start here...
Pride & PrejudicePride & Prejudice
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.05
A sort of "Shabby" version, lots of mud, loose hair, and "savage society."
Wives and DaughtersWives and Daughters
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $18.75
Another marathon but beautifully done. Strong acting from a well chosen cast makes this comming of age film a joy to watch. The typical Gaskell triste on family, community, equality and entitlement.
Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.99
Another Austen classic brought to life, with all the usual commentary on poverty, being female and marraige. This movie is well done.
PersuasionPersuasion
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $5.05
I enjoy this autumnal romance for its happy ending and contemplative mood. Again, typically Austenian in its theme - no money and marraige.
Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $12.99
This BBC edition has wonderful actors, which thankfully lack the wooden, rehearsed stage presence found in many early BBC productions. Some find this version a bit "steamy" for their taste, as it has some suggestive scenes. But if Bronte could have written it, she would have. They are consistent with the story.
The Heart of MeThe Heart of Me
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.00
This 30's period piece deals with the "indelicate" theme of infidelity..a tainted love that grows and endures in the worst of circumstances.
The Complete Musketeers (The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers)The Complete Musketeers (The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $9.50
Fantastic old movies with great performances by Robert York and Raquel Welch. Funny too.
The Taming of the ShrewThe Taming of the Shrew
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.99
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor make this a must see film for anyone who likes Shakesperian comedy. I Love his voice!
Dangerous BeautyDangerous Beauty
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.10
The luster of Venice in the 1500's, and the dangers of being a woman with a brain and no money....
Fiddler on the Roof (2-Disc Collector's Edition)Fiddler on the Roof (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $20.03
A wonderful musical, with lots of Jewish tradition and wit, and a bittersweet ending.
Yentl [Region 2]Yentl [Region 2]
Buy used from: $29.99
This film is not available in the US on DVD. If you can somehow secure a copy it is a cute film about knowing your place and thumbing your nose at it.
Mona Lisa SmileMona Lisa Smile
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Another great movie about the roles and expectations society creates for women, and those that would break them.
Legends of the Fall (Special Edition)Legends of the Fall (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.92
This bitter sweet tale is heartbreaking in it's sense of waste. It speaks to blood being thicker than water, young love and dissappointed hopes. "Tristain was the rock they broke themselves on."
The English Patient (Miramax Collector's Edition)The English Patient (Miramax Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $8.98
Another tale of love, forbidden yet sincere and transformative. Ralph Fiennes in one of his usual roles as an eccentric leading man, lost in a world of his own. But you know what they say, still waters run deep... I love how this story is told on two fronts, in retrospect and in the present.
Out of AfricaOut of Africa
Buy used from: $8.49
The usual Robert Redford sort of thing...there and not there. But still a fantastic tale of a strong woman finding meaning in a life that does not, as so often happens, turn out exactly as she would like.
Berkeley SquareBerkeley Square
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $25.00
An Edwardian Soap Opera! BBC only made one season of this melodramatic series. It's still entertainment, if slightly cheesy. Leaves a lot of loose ends that will never be tied.
Girl With a Pearl EarringGirl With a Pearl Earring
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.50
This movie is subtle, in that you have to get in the characters heads and imagine the depth of the "love" they feel for each other. Never overtly expressed, all is kept under wraps.
Chocolat (Miramax Collector's Series)Chocolat (Miramax Collector's Series)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.28
A movie about chocolate, but really about tolerance and love for others. No less than you would expect from the "food of the Gods."
Finding Neverland (Widescreen Edition)Finding Neverland (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $0.84
This movie is touching and sweet. About finding love, understanding and devotion.
Miss PotterMiss Potter
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $6.45
All about Beatrix Potter, a self made woman in a time when independence was decidedly unfashionable. Not Renee's most poweful performance, but worth seeing.
Marie AntoinetteMarie Antoinette
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.50
I'm not a big Kirsten Dunst fan, but she lends a kind of "cream puff" air headed quality to Marie that sort of grows on you.
The BuccaneersThe Buccaneers
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $8.11
A bit like a soap opera. Characters are a little wooden with lots of high drama. The British aristocracy meets American money.
Like Water for ChocolateLike Water for Chocolate
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.30
Love denied and duty. A movie no less about food than about the complexity of relationships undertaken for the wrong reasons. Kind of like "Love in a Time of Cholera".
Becoming JaneBecoming Jane
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.59
This movie, although not necessarily true, does give you a feel for Jane's lfe. Full of backhanded references to many of her best characters, overall pretty good.
Sense & Sensibility Collector's Set (Sense & Sensibility 2008 / Miss Austen Regrets / Persuasion 2007)Sense & Sensibility Collector's Set (Sense & Sensibility 2008 / Miss Austen Regrets / Persuasion 2007)
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $29.99
This is a great new adaptation by BBC that I really enjoyed for its smart acting and beautiful location by the sea. The addition of Miss Austen Regrets is a find as well. Based on Jane Austen's personal correspondence with her sister, it's more factual than Becoming Jane.
CranfordCranford
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $17.99
A true Gaskell novel all about the workings of a tiny village, its matriarchs and "the petty things."
The Other Boleyn GirlThe Other Boleyn Girl
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.24
Rich and dark like the best chocolate! Natalie Portman could be better as the scheming Ann, but Scarlett is fantastic as Mary. She is the glue that holds her family together as it is torn apart by greed and ambition, the only character you can really feel for without thinking they deserved what they got. All in all, a good movie about family, duty and honor (or lack there of).
PossessionPossession
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.44
A romantic drama about two present day scholars researching the love affair of two "back in the day" poets.
ElizabethElizabeth
Buy used from: $1.28
The dancing scene at the beginning of this movie with Cate Blanchette and Joseph Fiennes is one of the most touching on film. A queen made "Virginal" by a broken heart.
Elizabeth - The Golden Age (Widescreen Edition)Elizabeth - The Golden Age (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.73
Not as good as the first movie, but still worth watching. Story line is a little lacking, but the costuming and set design are incredible.
QuillsQuills
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.00
As Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses, I have to include this twisted account of the Marquis De Sade in my list. Erotic and not for the faint at heart, Michael Caine is perfect.
Bram Stoker's DraculaBram Stoker's Dracula
Buy used from: $1.96
This is sort of a cult film for me if not the most well acted. Set design and costuming make up for some of it. Overall, a great love story despite some not so great acting skills.
Memoirs of a Geisha (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)Memoirs of a Geisha (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $0.77
I remember this movie for how beautifully it is filmed. Lavish costuming and set design make it a feast for the eyes. Set in a prosperous pre war Japan, we are afforded a glimpse into a secret society of the "oldest profession."
Atonement (Widescreen Edition)Atonement (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.75
Keira Knightly and James MacAvoy shine as the star crossed lovers betrayed by her sister. A complex, textural plot that pivots between several time periods, keeps you busy until the end.
Henry Fielding's Tom JonesHenry Fielding's Tom Jones
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.74
A book that was banned for a century after it was written, earns its reputation as a witty, if baudy movie. One of the bright moments in British Literature and film, a must for any Angliophille. Thankfully, your husband's permission is not required to purchase it, as it was back then!
Dangerous LiaisonsDangerous Liaisons
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.78
"Love and Revenge, two of your favorites." Glenn Close is the power house of this Academy Award winning film as the scheming Marquise De Merteuil. Together with John Malkovich as the Vicomte De Valmont, they each turn in Oscar worthy performances in this lavish period piece.
North & SouthNorth & South
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $20.29
Not to be confused with the television series of the same name, North and South is instead a detailed study of the British class system by Elizabeth Gaskell. Considered by many to be her master work, North and South chronicles the developing love affair between a cotton manufacturer from the industrial North and a vicar's daughter from the more cosmopolitain South.
