Stardust (Full Screen Edition)Stardust (Full Screen Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $5.73
In my opinion, this is one of the most underappreciated films of the year. Funny, romantic, exciting, with sharp writing and excellent performances. I managed to convince a friend who was not a fan of Claire Danes to come and see this movie and she came out of the theater in love with it.
Enchanted (Widescreen Edition)Enchanted (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $8.28
A lovely movie that is made great by the amazing performance of Amy Adams. She took a character that could have been a silly caricature and instead made her sweet and believable.
Juno (Single-Disc Edition)Juno (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $5.97
The little indie that could. Ellen Page does a fantastic job as the wise-cracking Juno. It doesn't hurt that the soundtrack is as clever and offbeat as the movie's heroine.
Hairspray (Two-Disc Shake & Shimmy Edition)Hairspray (Two-Disc Shake & Shimmy Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $3.75
Hairspray was the first Broadway play I ever saw and I loved its humor and optimism. Although some of my favorite lines didn't make it into the film ("she's got acne of the SOUL!"), the movie version was as fun as the onstage musical.
Michael Clayton (Widescreen Edition)Michael Clayton (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $4.01
A tight legal thriller with the always classy George Clooney. An altogether amazingly well-done film which was deservedly nominated for numerous Academy Awards and Golden Globes categories. Tilda Swinton ended up winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Charlie Wilson's War (Widescreen)Charlie Wilson's War (Widescreen)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $5.25
Unlike many of the unrelentingly depressing war movies that have come out this year, Charlie Wilson's War manages to balance showing the horrors of war and still having a fun and entertaining story. Incredibly clever and fast-paced, and star Tom Hanks is as fantastic as usual.
Amazing GraceAmazing Grace
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.50
A powerful movie about William Wilberforce's campaign to end slavery in Britain. I watched it for Ioan Gruffud (who I love from Horatio Hornblower) but I was amazed by how well-done and entertaining the movie was, and it's now on my wishlist to buy.
Waitress (Widescreen Edition)Waitress (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.93
A tartly sweet tale of a small town waitress with a gift for making pies.
RatatouilleRatatouille
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $7.19
When I saw the previews for this, I wasn't impressed. A rat who wants to cook? Please. But don't ever underestimate Pixar. This deservedly won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film.
Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $9.95
The musical about the revenge of the Demon Barber of Street Fleet. Very bloody and pretty gruesome, but really well done with some great songs and performances by Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
MoliereMoliere
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $8.99
As a French minor and French Club officer in college, I have seen a lot of French films. This is one of my favorites. It's very much like a French version of Shakespeare in Love. Although familiarity with Moliere's works would add to the experience, this is a fun movie on its own merits.
Lars and the Real GirlLars and the Real Girl
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.99
Although the plot sounds weird and kinky, it really, really isn't. Instead, this is a sweet tale about a town coming together to support a shy, confused but very nice young man who hides behind a hallucination that a plastic woman is his girlfriend. Ryan Gosling gives an amazing performance as Lars.
Atonement (Widescreen Edition)Atonement (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.19
Beautiful period piece that's a little slow, but incredibly powerful.
Music and Lyrics (Widescreen Edition)Music and Lyrics (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.65
While it may not be Oscar-worthy, this is a cute and funny movie and a great addition to the romantic comedy genre. Hugh Grant proves that he is still charming and the fake '80s pop songs are oddly catchy.
The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.93
Although the frenetic editing still bothers me, this is a great edition to the Bourne franchise and answers some (but not even close to all) of the questions about who Bourne is. Plus, he uses a book as a weapon. How is that not great?
